Can a Sugar Scrub Spike Your Blood Sugar? 🍭🩸
Think your skin “eats” your spa treatments? If you’ve been avoiding body scrubs because you’re strictly managing your metabolic health, it’s time to separate spa-science from fiction.
Many of our guests on low-carb or ketogenic journeys worry that because the skin is our largest organ, it will absorb the sugar used in our treatments and cause a glucose spike. We decided to put that theory to the test.
The Science of Absorption
While the skin is porous, it is also an incredible filter. Sugar molecules (sucrose) are actually quite large and hydrophilic, meaning they don’t easily bypass the skin’s lipid barrier to enter the bloodstream.
To prove it, I wore a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) during a full Lemon Drop Sugar Scrub while in a fasted state.
The Results:
• Pre-Scrub: Stable baseline.
• During Treatment: Zero absorption.
• Post-Scrub: My blood sugar actually steadily lowered as my body remained in its natural fasting state.
The verdict? You get all the exfoliation and glow with zero metabolic “hidden costs.” In fact, the relaxation from the massage may even help lower those cortisol-related spikes!
