The core word of the week is "go"! 🏁
"Core words" are a small set of words that make up most of what we actually say on a daily basis. These vocabulary words are very important for early language development. Parents and therapists can support their children's core vocabulary by modeling core words in different contexts and creating opportunities for the child to use the word.

Opportunities to model "go" include:
-playing with racecars
-starting an obstacle course
-paired with other core words such as "go up", "go down" during play
-saying "go to sleep" at bedtime or during pretend play
-any opportunity to use "ready...set..."

This word is relevant all throughout our day, in ways we might not even think about. There are many simple ways to expose your child to the word and facilitate saying it on their own -- easily 50-100 times in a day!

Ask your child's therapist for more ideas on modeling core words to support your child's language development.

The core word of the week is "close"! πŸšͺ↩

"Core words" are a small set of words that make up most of what we actually say on a daily basis. These vocabulary words are very important for early language development. Parents and therapists can support their children's core vocabulary by modeling core words in different contexts and creating opportunities for the child to use the word.

Last week's word of the week was "open"; many of the same tips can be used to model this closely related core word:

-"Close your eyes" to get a surprise or play hide and seek
-"Close the toybox" after cleaning up
-"Close the door", cabinet, or window
-"Close" your mouth after a bite of food
-"Close" the car door after you climb inside

This word is relevant all throughout our day, in ways we might not even think about. There are many simple ways to expose your child to the word and facilitate saying it on their own -- easily 50-100 times in a day!

Ask your child's therapist for more ideas on modeling core words to support your child's language development.

The core word of the week is: "open"! πŸ‘

"Core words" are a small set of words that make up most of what we actually say on a daily basis. These vocabulary words are very important for early language development. Parents and therapists can support their children's core vocabulary by modeling core words in different contexts and creating opportunities for the child to use the word.

Here are some ideas for using the word "open":

-"Open your eyes" to see a surprise or begin playing hide and seek
-"Open the toybox" to get a preferred toy
-"Open the door", cabinet, or window
-"Open up" your mouth for another bite of food
-"Open" the car door so you can get inside

This word is relevant all throughout our day, in ways we might not even think about. There are many simple ways to expose your child to the word and facilitate them saying it on their own -- easily 50-100 times in a day!

Ask your child's therapist for more ideas on modeling core words to support your child's language development.

For Disability Pride Month, First-Person Reflections on Disability Self-Advocacy: In these essays, writers with communication-related disabilities β€” and, in some cases, their family members β€” describe rising to challenges by speaking up for themselves and other disabled people. The package also includes perspectives of CSD professionals associated with these writers.

The related illustration depicts the Disability Pride flag, with color bands representing red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, blue for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, and green for sensory disabilities. The colors are muted to accommodate sensory sensitivities.

Among the flag’s key messages are promoting full participation for disabled people and celebrating their individuality and contributions, messages reflected in the following essays. Read more: https://at.asha.org/Ir
