For Disability Pride Month, First-Person Reflections on Disability Self-Advocacy: In these essays, writers with communication-related disabilities β€” and, in some cases, their family members β€” describe rising to challenges by speaking up for themselves and other disabled people. The package also includes perspectives of CSD professionals associated with these writers.

The related illustration depicts the Disability Pride flag, with color bands representing red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, blue for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, and green for sensory disabilities. The colors are muted to accommodate sensory sensitivities.

Among the flag’s key messages are promoting full participation for disabled people and celebrating their individuality and contributions, messages reflected in the following essays. Read more: https://at.asha.org/Ir

Meet Aviana!

Aviana is a speech-language pathologist who works with all ages at the Silverdale clinic. We asked her to share a few things about herself, and here's what she had to say:

1. Sum up your role at Harbor Speech with emojis:
πŸ§ πŸ—£πŸ½πŸŒˆβ™Ύβ€

2. What is something surprising that many people don't know about you?
I dance ballet, which I began as an adult in 2024!🩰

3. What would your perfect weekend look like?
Some time outside on a sunny day, some time to read a good book, and maybe a movie night with friends or my partner.

4. Give us a good book or movie recommendation!
I just finished reading Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro for our work book club. I really enjoyed it.

5. What is one of the most important things you've learned throughout your career so far?
Every single person (and patient) truly is unique. It is important to meet someone where they're at as far as strengths, challenges, personal goals, and personality. There is no one-size-fit-all treatment plan or communication style!

June is both Aphasia Awareness Month *AND* Dysphagia Awareness Month!

But... What's the difference?

APHASIA (uh-FAY-zhuh) is an acquired language disorder that affects communication skills.

DYSPHAGIA (dis-FAY-zhuh) is difficulty swallowing and can involve the oral, pharyngeal, and/or esophageal stages of swallowing.

SLP's treat both types of disorders. Treatment is different for every client based on factors like their diagnoses, strengths and weaknesses, personal goals, and more.

Join us in celebrating our marvelous employee of the quarter, Noelle Simonson! πŸŽ‰

Noelle was born and raised in Washington, though she has also lived in Portland, Oregon and Orlando, Florida. She received her Bachelor's Degree in English from Central Washington University in 2017.

As insurance coordinator, Noelle is tasked with processing speech therapy referrals by checking benefits with their respective insurance companies. On top of that, she ensures that each patient is authorized for speech therapy both before and during the patients' scheduled treatment. She also works as a Front Desk Coordinator in between her insurance coordinating duties.
In her free time, Noelle can be found reading a good book or planning her next travel destination.

Thank you for all the hard work you do for our patients, Noelle!!

This Autism Acceptance Month, let's remember:

Autism is a spectrum. This means every individual with autism has unique experiences, personalities, skills, and support needs.

Autism is an identity. Everyone has their own relationship to their diagnosis and an understanding of what it means to them. Many individuals embrace autism as part of their culture and personal identity, something that shapes who they are.

Autism is NOT an epidemic. While incidence rates of autism have increased over the years, reasoning for this is multifactorial and due in large part to the evolution of diagnostic criteria and procedures thanks to research and advocacy efforts. There is no one cause of autism, with likely contributing factors including genetics, prenatal conditions, and birth complications. There is no "cure" for autism, as it is a descriptive label for the complex neurological profile of the individual diagnosed, not an illness.

This month, individuals and families are sharing their stories through the campaign. Join in to share your experiences and learn from authentic voices.
