Amigos de San Carlos, Honduras Medical Mission

Amigos de San Carlos, Honduras Medical Mission We are a group from Tacoma, Washington, who travel to Honduras to provide medical and other services.

The Honduras Mission Team makes a yearly trip at the end of January. It is open to anyone who wants to join (whether you physically go on mission or not): made up of lay people, engineers, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, optometrists, dentists, pharmacists, and lab techs. The engineer section predominantly works on potable water solutions while the medical mission provides basic medical and dental care to the nearly 1600 people we see at the same five villages each year. We also provide school supplies and uniforms, dental hygiene supplies, and 50 maternity bags. When possible we provide clothes, shoes, blankets, towels, and horse equipment to the people we serve. We work year round collecting school supplies, gently used clothing and shoes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, blankets, diapers, and items for the maternity bags. Fundraising is necessary to purchase the $6000 to $9000
of medications needed to serve the people. We meet the Third Tuesday of every month at 7PM in the convent. If you wish to join us working on the home front or go on Mission we extend a warm welcome.

Brigade Day 3- Mata de Platano changed to Moroceli.
It rained all night before we headed to high altitude (elevation 3800-4200 ft) area Mata de Platano. Eventually the buses could go no further safely. So we back tracked and Luis and Marina contacted the clinic at Moroceli. The local officials opened up the school andcee did a brigade there sending many of our suppliies via pickup to Mata de Platano. In the end we assisted Mata and served 253 people in Moroceli.

Brigade Day 2- Suyatillo
Tight quarters on a hillside facing south into the sun. Logistics crew Jaime, Ocean and Manuel had their work cut out for them. Its a solid football field length plus of carrying our equipment along a rocky narrow path to set up at the Suyatillo one room school.

Lomas Limpias- Brigade 1
You just never know what you are going to experience each day.
Dr. Nick Weber’s client with a swollen foot deformity and open wound on her heel required help from numerous departments- wound care with Dr. Ogilvie, provision of crutches and a special boot after manual lymph drainage to reduce swelling from PT, medication and a referral to a medical clinic, meeting old friends, flowers and a sleepy crew on the bus.
Dinner provided a birthday cake in honor of Ocean, Amy, Diana and Grace. Kelly Ogilvie wins the coveted Boykie frog award and packing for the next day’s brigade.

Day Three- Brigade at Lomas Limpias
We saw 157 people made up of 82 families today.
Everyone was in high spirits after the Seahawks win which they got to watch live after technology skills were exercised!
We suffered a flat tire on the drive to the village so enjoyed the local cows and scenery.

Day one on Mission starts with flight into the Comayagua airport followed by a two hour drive to the Nuevo Paraiso compound passing through the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
The Mission Honduras team from Pemberville, Ohio, was busy sorting through all the materials for doing their water filter brigades. After dinner everyone pitched in unloading the duffel bags sorting clothes, shoes, tooth brushes, towels, maternity bags, PT items and more into their designated piles.
