“In every human breast, God has implanted a Principle, which we call love of freedom; it is impatient of oppression, and pants for Deliverance.”

Phillis Wheatley 1753-1784 American Revolutionary Poet, First African-American published poet

https://youtu.be/bgL-m7uk4-I

Today we celebrate our country’s Independence Day. A day some 50 brave souls, at the risk of death by ex*****on, signed the Declaration of Independence from the biggest world power of its time, England.
I love this quote above from Phillis Wheatley. Why? She was a contemporary of the Revolution and was the first published poet in America of African descent. She was born in Africa but brought to the American continent at age 7. And yes, she was a slave. She knew about oppression and “panted” for Deliverance for her Freedom.”

We, at Lamb Health Direct Primary Care, are an Independent Health Care Clinic. We are not tied or affiliated with any Insurance plan. We have found that for the last 30 years, health insurance premiums have gone up, and coverage has gone down, every.single.time. That is a form of oppression for most American families.
Many of our patients love the fact that our clinic provides actual health care. We at Lamb Health work for you, the patient, not Insurance companies so that your best interests are served, not the insurance company.
How does this work?
***We function under a low monthly membership model. $75/member, $130/couple, $150/family
***We offer low cost high quality labs through wholesale cost from Lab Corp. we can even use your insurance to bill for your labs.
***Major discounts on imaging through Simon Med like CT scans and MRIs
*** We now accept Medicare
*** Vaccines for children 18 and younger and Covid (Moderna) vaccines at no charge.
*** Urgent care visits by same day or next day appointments
*** We are “off the grid.” We do not share your health info with any insurance company or government entity.
*** Reduced medication costs with our in-house pharmacy. Most of the time our meds cost less than GoodRx. Sometimes not. We want you to have options.
*** We offer a wide array of services including mental health, chronic and difficult illnesses like Long Covid, Chronic Fatigue etc. and can excise cysts, freeze warts and pre-cancerous skin lesions, biopsies etc. See our website for a more comprehensive list.
*** We combine the best of Western (Scientific evidence based) and Eastern Medicine (Principles of Ayurveda) as indicated by your needs.
*** And most importantly, we try and just listen and take our time to assist you in optimizing your health the best we know how.

Halloween and How to Prevent the Flu and other Infectious Demons

https://pin.it/4XjPLZT

The Influenza Virus

The Covid-19 pandemic this year of 2020 has significantly made us aware of our own vulnerability and a reminder of our inevitable mortality.
But, the pandemic has also taught us quite much on how viral infectious illnesses are transmitted and prevented. This will be my focus for today’s newsletter.

Are viruses alive entities?

Yes and no. They are DNA or RNA genetic material wrapped up with a protein coating. Left alone, viruses cannot “live” unless they enter a host cell or host organism. Once they enter a host they have an uncanny ability to make copies of themselves and overwhelm the host with illness. Philosophically, without a brain or central intelligence center, you would be hard pressed to find a “will to live” or survival focus for the viral particle. But, they have a remarkable ability to reproduce and within a few hours make millions of copies of itself. Reproduction is a hallmark of a living entity, a survival skill.

Coronavirus

So, we are inundated constantly with different viruses and bacteria on a daily basis. Some are more prevalent seasonally than others. To qualify as a pathogen, these invisible particles, do and can cause a person to be sick. We mostly relate these microscopic demons to infections like the Common Cold, Strep throat, Influenza, and now Covid-19. But, some viruses can cause genetic changes triggering the appearance of some kinds of cancer. Still other viruses are thought to be blamed for many auto-immune disorders including Type 1 Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s Thyroid disorder and many conditions of inflammatory arthritis, Celiac, and others. The virus enters the body, like a tornado, causes damage then virus is nowhere to be found in the aftermath but the body’s immune system is going full speed trying to correct everything and mistakenly attacks normal cells and other body parts thinking instead of leaving them alone. It is like the firemen and relief crew think the bad guys are inside the home and rather than get a search warrant they barge inside the cell and attack indiscriminately.
So, now that we have the picture in our minds that these pathogens called viruses, the little monsters invading our bodies, are abundant, and even ubiquitous in our environment, how to we stay safe and prevent ourselves from being sick?

https://cdn.technologynetworks.com/tn/images/thumbs/webp/640_360/strain-of-common-cold-virus-attacks-and-destroys-bladder-cancer-cells-321476.webp?v=10260522

One of many types of Common Cold viruses

What is the best prevention to stay healthy from infectious illnesses?
How do we keep from getting sick?

Fortunately, we do not have to do a million different things to combat the million different varieties of viruses and bacteria that our bodies are exposed to every day.
One way is to get a body suit like in the movie Bubble Boy.

https://youtu.be/jSRU48wCphI

But this is not only not practical but may be damaging in the future. First of all, a bubble suit would cost thousands of dollars. But, our immune system needs to get experience and exposure to combat these infectious agents. We cannot expect to win a battle, or a fight without training. We cannot expect to be good in our jobs, professions, sports, without training and experience. Likewise, our body recognizes and destroys foreign invaders the more familiar it is to the little monsters.

The following is what I recommend this winter season:

1. Continue with the boring stuff, and be diligent with mask wearing in public, social distancing and frequent hand sanitizer. These are true and tried and tested preventative measures universally recommended by all the World’s Epidemiologists and Infectious Disease experts.
2. Take Vitamin D3 between 2000 and 5000 units per day. Remarkable studies now show that this vital amine strengthens our immune system and especially helps our lungs during a respiratory illness.

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-d-coronavirus

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21849106/

3. Get a Flu shot. This will prevent illness in most Influenza viruses that cause disease but not all. The Influenza virus has an uncanny ability to change itself from year to year so the yearly Flu shot is recommended.
At Lamb Health we have a limited supply left. Cost is $20.

4. If you do get sick, viral illnesses do not require antibiotics. Antibiotics, good against bacteria, can actually pe*****te and destroy the unique bacterial cell walls which are different than human cell walls. But viruses sneak into our human cells and hide and can weaken ourselves but do not respond to antibiotics.
5. Other immune system enhancers:
A. Vitamin C up to 1000 units twice a day. I personally like to take those Emergen-C packets that are added to water or juice when I think I am coming down with something.
B. Selenium up to 50mcg
C. Garlic has some antibacterial and antiviral properties.
D. Echinacea and Golden Seal haven been shown to be helpful although studies are not as convincing.
E. Colloidal Silver. Silver is a heavy metal and ingesting it can be toxic. It might be helpful topically. Most experts do not recommend it to be taken orally. https://www.healthline.com/health/colloidal-silver

6. Encourage frequent hot showers, sauna and/or humidifier. Our bodies run a fever because this alerts our immune response much faster. So, some fever is good. I recommend taking something like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for fever if our temperature exceeds 102 F or, if our little ones or ourselves are feeling very miserable. It is hard to see our loved ones suffer.

Overall, I hope this newsletter has been helpful as we prepare for the winter months.

Hello Everyone!
Welcome Spring Equinox!
First I’d like to thank those who have Donated some supplies to our office. You are greatly appreciated.

I understand we are currently in a unique time of history. I hope that we can all keep it together as best that we can. To paraphrase a popular cinematic feature a few years back, “The odds are in your favor!” You will not only survive this but look back on this experience with great nostalgia. I do not want to minimize anyone’s suffering or pain during this transition however.
Here is the latest with some links:

What if I run out of food?
As you know, the groceries stores are gutted out but many places still have food options.
I am amazed at the resources people come up with. If you are without some items or, have excess of things and want to sell or share follow this link if you are in the Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and Gilbert areas that gives information and contacts out called: How Can I Help You?
https://www.facebook.com/groups/218911192646368/?ref=share

How long will this virus last?
Most experts say the peak of illness is about 4-6 weeks out then things will die down. The true answer is no one really knows. This is an interesting article with nice graphs and link. It does fall on the side of being an alarmist but I’d rather be extra precautious and be made fun of later, than to not be cautious at all and lose lives: https://link.medium.com/5oX1suoY24

How can I be tested?
Unfortunately there are no places with universal random testing. This is the response the Banner and Dignity Urgent Cares of the area are telling patients:
“If you have any questions or concerns about the coronavirus, otherwise known as Covid-19, please contact the Arizona Department of Health Covid-19 information line for the most up to date at 1-844-542-8201.
I have placed orders for testing at our small clinic from LabCorp, Quest, and one other labs. If and when testing is available I will let you know.

So I am hoping you are keeping hour social contacts at a distance and doing extra precautions with sanitation and hand washing.

I am available via text as you know for health related questions and concerns. the clinic is open but we are spacing out any office visits so that only one patient comes in at a time. Has it been busy? Overwhelmingly so but I am committed to being there for you, especially in these unique times.
We do have Telemed options. We also can view your rashes via photos. Text is preferred. Why? Studies show that most patients remember only about 20% of what the doctor said. Texting allows communications to be read and re-read later.

Our pharmacy is well stocked, for the most part. Despite putting in an order Over a month ago for Chloroquine and Hydroxyquoloquine, both meds promising to combat active Covid-19 patients, we do not have any and it is on back order.

Advice on what to do?

1. Reconnect with old friends or develop new relationships via social media.

2. Finish that novel you were going to write. Or, finish reading the ones you wish you had.
3. Develop a new talent like music, photography, art.

4. Limit media exposure. Yes we need to be informed but most news is geared to sensationalize. This can worsen your anxiety.

5. Learn to meditate, or effectively pray. This is a natural way to reduce stress, improve your immune system, improve your self-discipline, and yes, studies show that your happiness increases by at least 10% if you incorporate some form of meditation or loving prayer.

1. Learn to be a minimalist. With all the restrictions we are forced to limit our consumerism. I like this quote from Henry David Thoreau
From Walden
“A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone.”

2. Get out and start walking! This is good exercise. Speaking of Thoreau, he preferred the term:
Saunter.
Here is his essay from the 1862 edition from The Atlantic:
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1862/06/walking/304674/

Henry David Thoreau extols the virtues of immersing oneself in nature and laments the inevitable encroachment of private ownership upon the wilderness.

Hello Lamb Health Members:

Like you all, I am glued to the media about the latest information coming in. Every time I want to send you an email the information changes.
Here are some bullet points subject to change:
Is the whole world over-reacting?
Yes,
But this is a good thing. This Pandemic will go away because people, organizations, schools, NBA, etc, are taking extra precautions.

What is the chance of me dying?
Not very high. As of today there are 958 documented cases in the US with about 26 deaths. These are just the know cases that tested positive. Thousands upon thousands of people no doubt have the virus but the symptoms are too mild to even contact the doctor let alone be tested.

What should I do if I think I have the virus?
First of all, do not randomly come to our office. If later, you ended up testing positive for the virus then we would have to shut down the office for 2 weeks of quarantine.

There are protocols, although they are changing every day, to be tested. Right now, with limited number of tests (unless you are Tom Hanks), Public Health will screen your condition over the phone and direct you to a location if they feel you qualify.
Also, if you have a bad cough, especially if you have a ripping sensation with cough in your lungs then go to the ER. It may or may not be Corona but it could be something serious.

What should I do?
Keep up the handwashing, avoid public places as much as possible etc.

Will there be a medication shortage?

The wholesalers that work with have assured be that this will not be the case. Only about 13% of medications worldwide are made in China. I have some Plan Bs and Cs that should keep our supplies intact.

Ok to text me with any other questions. I will keep you posted the best that we can.

Are you happy with your health insurance? If so then do not read on.
But let’s learn about the great Liberator Simon Bolivar:

https://youtu.be/uxYYkjSN-gY

In the early 1800’s, similar to our Revolutionary War, Venezuela and other Latin American countries were feeling the itch for Independence from Spain. The timing was ripe. The common folks were being oppressed with a tax burden for the King of Spain Ferdinand VII. At the time he was in exile due to Napoleon’s expansive European conquest. Bolivar knew this and pointed out to the people that their heavy tax burden to Spain limited their freedom, perpetuated their poverty and did nothing to protect them.
Similarly your health Insurance does nothing to protect you from financial hardship and does not have your health in their best interests. Most personal bankruptcies are due to health care costs that were not covered by the health insurance they had. That is a shame.
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/11/this-is-the-real-reason-most-americans-file-for-bankruptcy.htm

Every year we pay higher and higher insurance premiums and less and less health care gets covered. Why do we let this happen? Like Spain of old, the health insurance industry rakes it in off the backs of the working folks. Every quarter, it seems, they collect record profits. Does that bother anyone?

We might have an answer to our health insurance woes. This strategy may cut your monthly health insurance premiums in half, and has the potential to get improved health care. This strategy especially benefits small businesses and their employees.

What is it?
Try the combination of a Direct Primary Care (like Lamb Health) plus the addition of a catastrophic health insurance plan to cover emergencies, hospitalizations, and some specialty care and high priced testing. These plans usually lock you into one premium until age 65.

CHOOSE LAMB HEALTH dpc for your Primary Care needs plus a Catastrophic Health Insurance Plan.

Go to www.lambhealthdpc.com for the amazing value you get for your health care.

Here some links to inquire further about these catastrophic health insurance options:
1. www.InsuranceExperts.Team
2. Natalie Ackerly Licensed Health Insurance Advisor. Call or text at 480-226-0803 email:natalieackerly@gmail.com or nackerly@ihcsb.com

The Doctor can concentrate on you, the patient, without the permission or interference of the insurance company. So, DPC clinics like Lamb Health gives you unlimited office visits, discounts on meds (we have our own pharmacy), discounts on imaging and same or next day appointments and many other services, texting and Telemedicine with the Doctor.

In honor of Black History Month and the Medical Profession Lamb Health honors:

Dr. Vivien Thomas. 1910-1985
A true Pioneer in newborn baby heart surgery.
His genius and technique has literally saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of babies born with heart defects (Blue Baby Syndrome). He invented the procedure now called the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig procedure. He was the brains and technical mastermind of the procedure. In the initial stages of research and experimentation he literally told the surgeon what to do during the operations.
Because of circumstances and institutionalized racism, he did not get any credit until much later in life.
The best part about him? Those who knew him reveal that not only was he amazingly intelligent but that he was extraordinarily kind, gentle and inspiring as a teacher when he later taught at Johns Hopkins University. See this Trailer:
