Might as well call it COVID+30
Boy oh boy, people are stressed, and to add insult to injury, their clothes are getting small. Seriously, stress is a huge factor in weight gain, and many Americans are getting softer from it.
Stress causes the body to tense up and releases hormones, and like cortisol and epinephrine, this encourages fat formation. These fight or flight chemicals were beneficial in saving our lives thousands of years ago when we were running from saber-toothed tigers. We'd run and burn off the fat. We would then find a safe place to hide, and the hormone release would stop.
Psychologically, stress can lead to feelings of losing control and depression. The American Psychological Association said in a recent report that "Weight loss is never successful if you remain burdened by stress and other negative feelings." Stress makes us tired. When we're tired, we have no energy, which means we don't want to exercise. When we don't exercise, we don't lose weight. Gaining weight adds to our stress. Yes, it's a circle thing.
So how do we DE-stress? The first step is to take the first step.
1. GET OUTSIDE and let your feet take you somewhere! Start slowly, maybe only 20 minutes a day, and increase the walk over time.
2. Express your feelings. We all have someone whose voice perks us up. Call them, even for just a few minutes. That's what friends are for. We're your friend too, call us if you want!
3. Write in a journal. Keeping a journal is a way to capture those feelings at that moment. By the time you're done, those feelings will be on the way out of your system. Then you will have an excellent log book of these crazy times to share with your grandkids.
4. Turn off your TV and news feeds for a day (or weeks). We need to take some time off from the madness for goodness sake. Besides, when the world is on fire, your garden hose is too short.
5. Take a hot bath. A hot bath will initially give your body a kick, which in turn will kick your mind too.
6. Come in and get a Lipo shot - it's on sale this month, and it has all the B vitamins your body needs for dealing with stress. Don't forget about boosting your immune system with a daily dose of Vitamin D and Vitamin C.
No matter what we're going through, getting healthy and staying healthy is the ultimate victory over stress.
