Meet Jessica — today’s hero!

Jessica rolled up her sleeve and donated blood at Vitalant, helping to save lives and make a difference in our community.

Just as her kindness and generosity will do, every donation is vital for patients who need lifesaving blood transfusions.

Matt has been donating blood for years, but when he learned how he could help patients who need platelet transfusions, he started giving platelets every two weeks.

"My three hours of time is a small price to pay for a cancer patient getting help," Matt said. "I am definitely not turning back." Thank you, Matt, for your dedication!

Nearly half of patients who need platelets are fighting cancer. Platelets can only be used for up to a week after donation. That’s why platelet donors are vital to a continually stable supply. Learn more: vitalant.org/platelets

For Kendra, donating blood is personal. Her 20-year-old niece, Sidney, has a rare autoimmune disease called Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy, which causes severe muscle loss.

“Only a month into college, I started getting so tired that even walking across campus left me exhausted,” Sidney said. “Soon I couldn’t climb stairs, brush my hair, or even hold up my head. I eventually ended up in the ICU, unable to swallow or breathe on my own.”

Doctors began IVIG treatments, each of which is derived from plasma from thousands of donors. Sidney gets six a month.
Kendra, who had donated occasionally before, was forever changed by seeing her niece fight for her life. “I can’t thank donors enough, but I can do my part. I’ll never miss an opportunity to give,” she says.

Today, Sidney is thriving back at college, ballroom dancing, hiking, and even rock climbing.

🩸 “An hour of your time means a lifetime to people like me,” Sidney said.

To her kids, she’s Mom. To someone in a hospital bed, she’s hope.

When Mindy donates blood, she’s giving more than a few minutes of her day; she’s giving patients a chance to heal, recover, and go home to their own families.

As a Type O donor, she knows her blood can help almost anyone and plays a vital role in emergencies. All blood types are constantly needed to support patients relying on transfusions. Learn how you can make the biggest impact based on your blood type: vitalant.org/PowerUp

The energy she brings? Lifechanging. The impact? Unforgettable.

Bonnie has been a dedicated blood donor since the early 1990s, but this past year, she took her commitment to the next level by volunteering with Vitalant. At our large blood drives, she connects with donors, spreads encouragement, and helps make lifesaving moments possible.

Working closely with our team, Bonnie has become a familiar face at multiple major events. She’s not only a passionate advocate for blood donation, but she also continues to give platelets regularly, demonstrating that true impact comes from both giving time and giving life.

Inspired by Bonnie? You can make a difference too. Join us as a volunteer and help create unforgettable impact: vitalant.org/Volunteer

Some people retire. Dave just changed how he serves his community.

He began donating whole blood back in the late seventies, added regular platelet donations in the eighties, and hasn’t slowed down since.

After retiring, Dave became a volunteer hospital services driver with Vitalant in 2016, making sure lifesaving blood products reach the patients who need them most.

With 15 years of service as a Reserve Deputy with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Dave knows the importance of stepping up for his community.

“Being a volunteer is something I have done most of my life,” he says.

Thank you, Dave, for showing us what service looks like.

If you want to make a difference too, volunteer with Vitalant and support our lifesaving mission. Find opportunities near you: vitalant.org/volunteer

October 20, World Statistics Day reminds us that behind every number is a story, and behind every blood donation is a life transformed.

Meet Presley, a courageous 9-year-old in Arizona living with one of the rarest genetic disorders in the world: KNCA1 gene deletion. Her journey has been marked by countless surgeries and medical challenges, including a battle with severe anemia that required five O-negative blood transfusions.

Thanks to generous donors and organizations like Vitalant, Presley is now in 4th grade, starting to walk, communicate, and thrive. Her mom calls her “one in a billion,” and Presley’s resilience proves just that.

Her story is a powerful reminder: behind every data point is a life. Behind every donation is hope.

Every drop counts. Every act matters. Be the one who makes a difference.

Olivia made her Sweet 16 unforgettable by making it about others.

For her 16th birthday, she gave blood for the first time, inspired by her sister who is a regular donor. Olivia even encouraged her dad to donate for the first time on her special day, turning her birthday into a family celebration of giving.

Thank you, Olivia, for choosing to mark your milestone by helping others and inspiring those around you. Your generosity proves that even one donation can make a lasting impact.

Inspire others to join you in saving lives. You can even track your impact: vitalant.org/ReferAFriend
