in 1937, the bill to authorize Cape Hatteras National Seashore, sponsored by Congressman Lindsay Warren of North Carolina, was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Therefore, approving the creation of the first National Seashore in the United States.

By 1953, enough land was acquired to officially establish Cape Hatteras National Seashore as a unit of the National Park Service. To mark the occasion, water was taken from the first National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and blended with the waters of the first National Seashore at Coquina Beach.

The legacy of creating the first national seashore was cascading. Less than a year after Cape Hatteras' dedication ceremony, talks began to establish Cape Cod National Seashore, and in the following years eight more National Seashores were approved.
