Read my latest article!! Cane Use. Which Hand and Why?
Do you put the cane in the left or the right hand? What if you have 1 painful hip on one side and a bad knee on the opposite side of the body? What should you do regarding cane placement when there is only 1 railing on the steps? Best answer, ask your physical therapist.
A cane can give you an increase in support or balance. A cane may enable a person to walk further with less pain, increase stability, and may allow an individual to walk on a surface they typically avoid, such as grass. Ascending or descending stairs or a curb with a cane is very helpful. Especially on the steps where a walker cannot go. Read more at http://www.energy-pt.com/blog-2/

Measure your Fall Risk

Physical therapists use many tests and observations to determine fall risk. Timed Up and Go(TUG) is one simple tool to determine fall risk.

The TUG may be self administered but typically performed by a healthcare professional. Here's how to do it yourself.

Measure 10 feet away from the base of a standard chair and place a piece of tape on floor.

You can use any assistive device you normally use such as a cane or rolling walker. Be consistent with device if you compare your score.

Start seated in chair. To read more check out http://www.energy-pt.com/blog-2/?logout=1

Overcome Lockdown Inactivity: Tips

Quarantine and lockdowns are tools used to combat COVID-19. To stop the spread of COVID-19 over 100 countries implemented lockdown and quarantine strategies. Physical inactivity and deconditioning, or getting out of shape, are side effects of quarantine and lockdowns. In under two weeks, you can see physiological deconditioning.

Studies show in simple step reductions, that metabolic changes occur such as an increase in abdominal fat, negative effects of glucose and insulin metabolism, decrease in muscle mass, and an increase in an inflammatory response

3 Shoulder Stretches for Mobility
By Dr. Julie Hawthorne Adamski
www.energy-pt.com
Shoulder mobility can be measured by how high you reach overhead, out to the side, and behind your back. Mobility of the shoulder is important for overhead reach, to help tuck in your shirt, and doing your hair. Here are my favorite shoulder stretches to help with upper extremity mobility.
1. Posterior Capsule Stretch. Grab above your elbow and pull your involved arm across your body. You can feel the stretch between the back of the shoulder to the outside of the shoulder.
