This week’s Preserving Memories, Saving the Past feature highlights the story of Sandy Sarsany, a resident of Champion Estates Assisted Living and a retired critical-care and flight nurse. Sandy’s extraordinary path into aviation medicine began at age 47, after she had raised four children. She reflects on the early influences that shaped her career, including her aunt’s work as a nurse and her father’s role as an aviation mechanic. Following many years in intensive care and critical-care education, Sandy joined the flight program at University Hospital in Cleveland, where she completed months of demanding training in trauma care, pediatric transport, and helicopter safety. Her career took her across multiple states responding to emergencies, stabilizing critically ill patients, and transporting premature infants, trauma victims, cardiac patients—and, on one unforgettable mission, even a monkey.
