What is cupping and how can it enhance your bodywork session?

Cupping is an ancient modality that creates negative pressure or suction on the applied area. It has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and in that context it is used to remove blockages in Qi, or life force energy, to create balance and overall health in the body. When used for this purpose, cups are usually placed on specific points and left there with little or no movement. In my practice, I do cupping massage, which means I keep the cups moving and have an intention of working more with the tissues and muscles. So much of massage consists of pushing down, so cupping can provide a wonderful myofascial release by lifting instead to create space for the body to unwind. As evidenced by the marks left behind, cupping also brings blood and nutrients to an area by creating a microtrauma, much like a bruise. In contrast to stationary cupping, cupping massage tends to leave lighter and fewer marks on the body, but be aware that some marks are likely to remain after the session.
