Eugene Alan "Gene" Essex, 87, passed away on February 8, 2025, in Glasgow, Kentucky. He was born on January 22, 1938, in Payette, Idaho, to Carol and Chuck Essex.
Gene proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962, spending most of his service at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to American Steel as a plant supervisor and then became a title researcher at Fidelity, which was his favorite job. After relocating to John Day, Oregon he took a job at Grant County Building Supply where he worked until retirement.
In 1972, Gene became a Christian and was an active member of Faith Bible Church. He later played a role in establishing Faith Bible School in Aloha, Oregon. After relocating to John Day, Oregon, he became a member of John Day Nazarene Church. His faith remained a guiding force throughout his life.
Gene had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He also found joy in bowling and square dancing. But mostly, he cherished time spent with loved ones. Though he was a quiet man, his devotion to his family and faith was unwavering.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Veronika "Nicky" Sallak Essex; sons Shawn Essex (Teresa) and Shelby Essex (Kim); grandchildren Heather Rookstool (Zane), Ashley McKee (Deven), Koby Essex (Ashley), Jake Essex, and Riley Essex; and great-grandchildren Zeke Rookstool, Zoey Rookstool, Brodee McKee, Maycee McKee, and Zac McKee.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Sheven Essex; daughter Shannon Sheldon; sister Audrey Smith; and brother Lyle Essex.
His memory will be cherished by those who knew him.
Gene will be interred at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a monetary donation to one of the following organizations: The Shanti Niketan Hospice Home, The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or The Parkinson's Foundation.
The family would like to extend their most heartfelt appreciation to TJ Samson Hospice Program, The Shanti Niketan Hospice Home, and the nurses and caregivers who, along with his family, provided loving care to him through his last months and days.
