To eat or not to eat?

has a run down on the evidence and I recommend checking it out before running to the grocery store! Many hospital based providers will recommend against eating in labor.

As a homebirth midwife, I like to remind parents that birth is a marathon event. Your uterus is a muscle that needs to be fed - starving it is counter productive. A balanced meal with complex carbs, protein, and fiber are perfect for early labor for sustainable energy.

BUT, most of the time, your appetite will dwindle as contractions get more intense and having some easy to grab & get down sources of energy will be better than trying to stomach a real dinner in active labor.

If you're on the health and wellness side of instagram, you may be avoiding sugar at all costs. I'm here to remind you, it's the preferred source of energy for your muscles and helps transport those precious electrolytes for better hydration! Consider carbohydrates for labor and a big protein meal postpartum!

Consult your healthcare provider before making decisions about labor snacks 😉

Too many families that are great candidates for homebirth are still trying to find what they're looking for in a system that isn't set up for it.

Consultations are free. Come find out what homebirth can look like.

PS, one of those spots is about to be filled!

You're in labor and feel the urge to push.

As your next wave builds, you grunt to relieve the pressure, and can tell you're starting to bear down.

When it ends, your midwife quietly asks you, "Did you feel like pushing on that last one?"

"Yeah, a little"

She sits still; hands in her lap. In a couple of minutes she will listen to your baby's heartbeat and sit back again with her hands ready. Your playlist plays in the background. You change position or get back in the birth pool.

Soon, you'll feel a stronger urge to push and eventually your body will join in and take over pushing your baby out on it's own. Your midwife knows to expect this. She waits.

If you'd like reassurance, she can feel for your baby and let you know how well it's moving with your efforts.

When she sees your baby's head, she excitedly tells you so. You push with focus, knowing your baby is almost here.

As you feel your body open and stretch, she reminds you to slow down. Breathe and don't rush the end to keep your tissues intact.

You reach down and cup your baby's head as it oozes out into the world. Your midwife lifts her hands and waits once more for the next push that will bring your baby's slippery body into her open hands. You bring your baby to your chest. Your hard work is over.

"Midwives have skilled hands and know when to sit on them"

This is a normal homebirth scenario well known to midwives.

It is absolutely apparent if you've ever seen a pushing phase in the hospital versus at home that midwives help keep birth simple.

Midwifery care is simple.

Not because we don’t do all the labs and ultrasounds, we do those, too.

In fact, we spend 4x as long with you face-to-face than your average hospital based provider.

Midwifery is simple because my team and I know you.

We listen, problem solve with you, we know about your pets and your weekend plans. We have the time for it because we aren’t part of a system that’s understaffed and over utilized.

When it comes to labor, having an unmedicated birth is not as complicated as if you were to step through hospital doors and find your elevator up to Labor and Delivery. One provider seeing you through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum means I won’t ask you five times if you’re allergic to banana peels and what brings me to your house while you’re in labor.

You won’t explain to me between contractions why you want to give birth on your hands and knees, remind me to wait to clamp your baby’s cord, decline cervical checks and induction dates before you’ve even reached 40 weeks. I know which veins are your good ones, should you need an IV, because I’m the one who has drawn your labs before. I know your partner wants to help catch his baby or that he gets weak at the sight of blood.

I know that birth is normal.

All families deserve the simplicity that comes with the midwifery model of care and while there are lovely providers working within the hospital system that know how to manage high risk pregnancies - simple supportive care is the default for home birth midwifery and midwifery is right for families that want simple low intervention births.

I know y'all in the first trimester need something to look forward to 🤢 and I don't just mean an end to fatigue and the advice to try crackers and ginger ale.

This makes a great mother's day gift to your friends and family who are currently pregnant. Sneakpeek testing is simple, cheaper than later genetic testing, and results are back within days.

Lying flat on your back is one of the least physiologic positions for birth. It works against gravity, narrows the pelvic outlet, and can reduce blood flow to the baby. At home, most moms instinctively want to be upright to deliver their baby. Do a few want to be on their back? Yes....and if that feels the best for them, that's just fine

Non-aesthetic protein snack reminder. Feeling crappy between meals? It could be blood sugar instability.

Adding protein (and fiber) to your meals or snacks helps stabilize your blood glucose and keep nausea away (to a degree) during pregnancy.

Mix it up and add toppings you like to prevent making these snacks from becoming a chore.

Safe catch tuna is the lowest mercury brand I have found on the market - they test every fish and there's a long list of benefits of omega-3s. Sardines have even more omegas and lower mercury but may be harder to stomach 😬

Blend cottage cheese if you hate the clumps. I mix it into peanut butter or top spaghetti with it. It's higher in protein than most Greek yogurts without the tanginess.

I like oikos vanilla yogurt topped with pepitas, walnuts, frozen raspberries (Walmart has better frozen fruit than Kroger imo), honey and salt.

One string cheese is usually about 6 grams of protein and very easy to eat!

And of course nut butters are available in packets for busy days or if you aren't one to remember snacks before leaving the house - these are easily kept in your bag and are shelf stable.

Do you have any quick and easy protein snacks you'd add to the list?

A dirty mirror selfie for this account.

Those September babies all showed up together just like last year.

I'm taking my last few continuing education classes to prepare for my midwifery license in Kentucky, and all the boring but necessary details of making sure I can take my own clients in 2026.

New pink lamp at the office (habitat for humanity in Glasgow is dangerously close by). Kroger flowers, egg and cheese bagels, and big trees on long walks. More updates soon 😊
