Importance of Music Therapy in the Oncology Population

My name is Melanie Isbell and I am a nurse practitioner in the Oncology Department at T.J. This year a dream has been fulfilled by having music therapy available to our oncology patients during their treatment. We have started a pilot program with our music therapist and the Rehabilitation Department here at T.J. to provide music therapy for patients during treatment.

The initiation of this pilot program has been wonderful for our patients. It has reduced anxiety and distress in patients by providing them with comfort in the music of their choosing. Emotional expression of music has provided distraction, relaxation, and social connection for patients that they would not have otherwise had. Measurable improvements in not only patient reported feelings but also subjective findings of decreased respirations were found.

In addition to music therapy to the oncology patients, it has also been beneficial to staff with many reporting feeling better after listening in on sessions themselves. Patients have expressed great interest in this program and look forward to meeting with the music therapist when she comes in. We look forward to a continued relationship with our awesome music therapist to continue to provide this much needed and beneficial therapy to our patients.

The Rehab Team hosted the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber Leaders of the Future last week for Civic and Nonprofit Day. They were able to learn about T.J. Community Mission Foundation Projects and join in on some Music Therapy.
