“Feed baby with the slowest ni**le you can find so they don’t “like”it more than the breast.”
Bah.
Bulltwinkle.

I’ve seen parents taking an hour to feed a healthy term baby with a bottle, because someone told them this persistent myth.
That’s too long folks!‼️🚫
Slow isn’t always best - each baby and each bottle are different. Your breast isn’t necessarily “slow”, nor can you really change the flow.

Certainly, super fast bottle teats aren’t great either.💦💦(hey, looking at you, Similac hospital teats!)
What’s a parent to do???

Here’s the seeet spot: Side lying elevated feeding on a pillow or your legs, bottle horizontal, watch the baby!

She should be easy; meaning suck swallow suck suck, pause breathe, easy. Not choking, not exhausted from working too hard.
🕘🕘🕘15 minutes or so!🕙🕙✅

Long feeds just tucker everyone out.
Yeah, we do bottle feeding consults too, come hang with us!

We spend LOADS of time discussing supply issues with our clients.
And we realize this: YA’LL are very different in your needs and goals and circumstances of your lives.

That’s why these discussions of how much milk does NOT equal your success as a parent.
Never ever.
Tell me a pediatric or lactation professional who makes you feel less than because of your situation, and I’ll be there for you. (And probably wish a million ants to show up at their next picnic🐜🐜)
You are the only one (with mental health at the top of the decision Christmas tree) who knows your specific challenges.
We’ve got you:)

A recent client said this to me, and I thought it was pretty poignant.

There’s what’s optimal, and there’s what’s accessible and in a perfect world they meet. Unfortunately, earth in 2026 is not that world for everyone.

The truth is that we don’t all have access to the same options. Even beyond whether or not we can EBF, some of us don’t have realistic access to the measures it takes to maximize milk production, and we have to have more honest conversations about that.

When the focus of “what to do” with low supply is squarely centered on maximizing production and that’s framed as the most valuable measure of success, we’re setting huge volumes of families up to feel like a failure if/when they can’t access what facilitating that entails.

Especially when you have low supply due to underlying maternal factors, it entails doing more than the typical EBF dyad to maximize milk production. It’s hard.

Some of us have the ability to pull out all the stops. We can nurse with a supplementer and sit around in a rocking chair feeding every 90 minutes around the clock. Some of us DO NOT have that option. It doesn’t mean one of us is doing it better or more correctly.

Your biggest success in breastfeeding doesn’t have to be defined by how much you increased your milk supply. It’s okay if your “as much as I can” isn’t as much as someone else can. No two lives are the same. We all have different supports and different abilities.

Please just remember that breastfeeding success doesn’t have to look one way.

For me, it’s the growth that happens as we work to balance feeding practices with what feels most positive and sustainable. It’s how those feeding practices foster deeper connection with our babies. It’s how they impact our growing sense of identity and confidence as a provider.

It can mean different things to different people, and success means discovering your own way within the parameters of what’s accessible to you.

There’s the biological norm, then there’s being a human in 2026. Please be gentle with yourself ❤️

Back to work: STAT!
Ughhhh… it’s hard to leave that post partum bubble right?
Even more challenging with a 13 hour shift in the cardiac transplant ICU
Or in back to back surgeries, or anesthesia cases where you are lucky to pee.👀

I’ve been a RN for most of my adult life, in and out of clinical bedside nursing. Back to work is always making a plan, but none so tricky and potentially complicated than being in those situations where so one is caring for human life.

The mix of clients in the office today made me realize how often we navigate pumping and feeing challenges, and very often very successfully!
🩺Usung a wearable pump: how and where and when?
🩺How to time pumping at work and how flexible can it be?
🩺Are you in the OR, or procedure settings?

🩺How can you rally support from your peers?

Whewwww-
We’ve been busy lately!
Which is great!😊👍🏽
But can you tell what we were up to today?
💙Flange sizing! This mom actually measured and pumped with a size 24 mm fl**ge (SO RARE!)
🩷Educated parents about oral tethers and ties, using Renee Bebes awesome book!
💙Did some rhythmic motion bodywork for a baby with tight shoulders
🩷Tried a ni**le shield for a parent with significant ni**le pain (it worked fairly well, we’ll see if she can continue to feed at breast)
💙🩷In all of these situations, we listened, we made feeding plans that met families where they are, kept babies fed, and parents goals in mind.
🩷💙We counseled on contraception plans, and mental health assessments.
We created sleep and meal plans for keeping sanity-
💜💜All in a days work 💜💜

We often discuss IUD placement options in the space of breastfeeding with our clients. Its a great form of contraception, don't have to think abaout it every day, high efficacy rates, and for MOST people, it does not affect milk supply.
For some? It can...

Read more here.

(Long story short, you could try the mini-pill first, and get the IUD placed later, if there is no change in milk supply)

BIRTH CONTROL AND MILK SUPPLY
An IUD is a form of birth control that’s put into your uterus to prevent pregnancy. One of the most common forms of birth control, it’s long-term, reversible, and considered one of the most effective birth control methods. Many doctors will encourage new mothers to have them placed between 4-6 weeks postpartum checkup to prevent pregnancies too close together. The Paragard IUD is wrapped in copper and doesn’t have hormones. The Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla IUDs use the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. Be aware that each IUD has a different amount of progestin. They are not created equal. Progestin is also the hormone found in the mini pill.

Hormonal IUDs and the mini pill are often recommended by doctors as the best form of birth control for breastfeeding mothers because most of the research that is available says that they don’t impact breast milk supply. And many who use these methods don’t experience any drop in supply. For some, though, both the mini pill and the hormonal IUDs will drop breast milk supply, some times drastically. Every body is sensitive to different levels of hormones. If you have an IUD placed and notice a drop in supply, the only way to increase supply again is to remove the IUD. Increased pumping or herbal supplements will usually not be enough to increase supply again because you’re working against hormones. The only way to rebound supply would be to remove the IUD. If you’re considering a hormonal based IUD and aren’t sure if your supply will drop, consider taking a few rounds of the mini pill (progestin only) which is the same hormone as the IUD. If your supply drops, you only have to stop taking the pill and your supply will rebound much quicker.
Did you use a hormone based birth control? Did you notice a change in your breast milk supply?
