The Difference Between Revisiting and Retrieving

One of the most common fears about inner child work is that it means becoming lost in the past,
endlessly reliving old pain without resolution. This fear is understandable, and it points to a real
distinction that matters enormously in the healing process.

Revisiting means going back to the wound and experiencing it again from inside the child's
perspective, without adult resources, without the capacity to metabolize, without the ability to provide what the child needed. This can retraumatize rather than heal.

Retrieving is different; It means going back with your adult Self present, with the capacity to witness the child's experience compassionately, to provide what the original environment could not, and to bring that part of your Self forward into the present rather than leaving it behind again.

The goal is not to live in the wound; The goal is to stop leaving the child in it.
