Valley Health in Winchester is piloting a groundbreaking program that’s reshaping how Virginia responds to mental health crises.

Through the Special Conservators of the Peace (SCOPs) initiative, trained professionals, armed or unarmed, are stepping in to accompany individuals in crisis to hospitals, reducing the need for law enforcement involvement.

Having launched mid-August, Gov. Glenn Youngkin celebrated the new program on Wednesday.
