Your body makes three types of tears, each with an important role:

Basal tears
These are always present. They lubricate, nourish, and protect the cornea, acting as a constant shield against dust, debris, and germs. As we age, basal tear production naturally slows, which can lead to dry, irritated eyes.

Reflex tears

Corneal side effects from antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have been reported and are often called microcyst-like epithelial changes (MECs). While the exact cause is still being studied, current research suggests that the medication can enter the surface cells of the cornea. These cells may become damaged and shed, then are gradually replaced by new, healthy cells.

ADCs are designed to target cancer cells, but eye changes may occur if the drug binds where it shouldn’t, if the chemical linker is unstable, or if the cancer-fighting payload is especially strong.
