Our practice was founded based on the mission to create a dedicated Theranostics Center for the patients of Maryland and the surrounding area. Theranostics is an emerging area of Nuclear Medicine that combines Therapy (Thera-) with Diagnostics (-ostics). First, a tiny amount of a molecule called a ‘radiotracer’ is administered that allows for the acquisition of a molecular imaging test, such as a positron emission tomography (PET) scan or a single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan at a diagnostic imaging center. Then, the molecular imaging results, clinical notes, and pathology results are reviewed in a personalized consultation with the patient at our clinic. If the molecular imaging and other clinical information supports a potential benefit of molecular therapy, we have a discussion regarding the risks and benefits related to this therapy together with the patient as well as a discussion of the treatment process. Together with the patient, we determine whether therapy is a preferable option. At a molecular therapy visit, a similar molecule to the one used in the initial molecular imaging test is combined with a radioactive isotope, which delivers targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy (internal radiation therapy) for the purpose of causing cancerous cell death. Our AMIT Clinic is focused on delivering the highest quality of care with a particular emphasis on patient comfort.
