For many, the new year brings about resolutions to healthier living, whether that means drinking more water or eating better. As we move through January, though, it can be easy to lose those initial motivations, and continuing to maintain dietary changes can be a major hurdle for some.

On Monday, Gage Blottenberger, RD, a registered dietician with UM BWMC, joins MPT's Direct Connection to discuss tips to establish healthy eating habits that can last you well beyond when resolutions begin to fade.

Learn more about Gage in his "About Me" video and tune in to MPT on Monday, January 19 at 7 pm to hear his interview.

Please join us in welcoming baby Athena Bonilla Escobar to our community!

UM BWMC helped little Athena arrive at 6:52 pm on New Year's Day. She was born to Yesley Escobar and Joel Bonilla of Ellicott City, weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces and measuring a little over 17.5 inches long. Athena was a wonderful way for her family to start the year.

Welcome, Athena, and congratulations, Yesley and Joel!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 5% and 20% of the U.S. population comes down with the flu each year. This means that it’s important to take the proper precautions to protect your family from this common—yet potentially deadly—viral infection.

If you believe that you or a family member have the flu, call your primary care doctor immediately for testing. If you have a flu diagnosis, your doctor may prescribe you antiviral medication to lessen the severity and length of the illness. You can also go to an urgent care center near you.

Congratulations to Jessica Kelly, RN, from the ICU, for winning the DAISY Award for August 2025! Jessica was nominated by a colleague for going above and beyond to ensure a patient on her unit was able to receive the necessary care.

"Jessica was caring for a patient who requires a special tool for their care. The patient had brought the necessary equipment with them, but it had been misplaced somewhere between the patient's check-in and admission to the unit. Jessica took it upon herself to search the areas where the patient had been. She spoke with staff in an effort to track down the equipment but was unable to find it. Rather than stop there, Jessica continued to advocate for the patient. Through her persistence, she learned that the patient would be unable to receive the proper care without the special equipment, so she escalated the issue and was able to arrange a courier to pick up the equipment and deliver it in time.

This is a remarkable example of Jessica's unwavering commitment to her patients. She demonstrated not only clinical excellence, but deep compassion, going far beyond her expected duties to ensure this patient's care would not be compromised. It's this kind of dedication that makes Jessica such an exceptional nurse."

Thank you, Jessica, for your unwavering dedication to our patients!
