Toddlers ❤️

Toddlers aren’t born clingy. Their nervous system learns clinginess through repeated patterns. When a child is deeply focused and hears “Wow, that’s amazing,” their attention snaps to you. The brain quickly links play with seeking your reaction instead of staying in the task. Over time, focus breaks turn into dependence.

Deep play is not “just playing.” It is the brain practicing problem-solving, self-control, and emotional regulation. These quiet moments help toddlers build the pathways needed to stay with a challenge without constant reassurance. But when every calm moment is interrupted with praise or commentary, the brain learns to look outward for cues instead of inward for confidence. This is how velcro behavior forms. To support healthy independence, observe without interrupting, join only when invited, and save praise for process after the moment ends. This strengthens their ability to stay immersed, not seek you for direction.

Independence grows when focus isn’t broken.

Let’s use this week to create safe spaces for our curious kids. Keep young children away from the fireplace to prevent burns from the hot glass.
