Dear Friends of VOSH Arizona,
We are about to start planning the 2016 mission trip so wanted to get preliminary details out to everyone and get a first indication of interest. Please reply with a yes, no or maybe to me at reism001@gmail.com by December 4. This will give the Rotaries an estimated count for lodging.
The mission dates will be 2/27/16 to 3/06/16. This includes Saturday and Sunday travel days and Sunday set up time. Midwestern College of Optometry has their spring break then, so that students can volunteer with us.
The mission site is Sahuaripa with probable lodging about 30 minutes away. VOSH Arizona has been to Sahuaripa before, so we know there is great need in this area. While some non-Arizona members will fly, those in AZ can carpool or bus to Hermosillo- an approximately 5 hour trip (from Tucson.) The last time we travelled to Sahuaripa we stayed overnight in an Hermosillo hotel (at our own expense) on Saturday and then travel over the mountains on Sunday, led by our Mexican Rotary friends. We are waiting for communication from them to see if this will be the plan again for 2016.
VOSH Arizona is fortunate to have such a strong relationship with the Hermosillo, Mexico Rotary chapter (Pitic), as they do all the advance planning with people at the selected mission site. And we are fortunate that several US Lions chapters provide us with glasses. Sedesson, what we would call the department of social and health services, provides additional support, including room and board near the site, and is the government body in Mexico responsible for our mission.
Yes, the workday is long and intense, as we try to serve as many folks as possible. We often have 10 hour days, so be prepared with comfortable shoes, snacks, etc. Also be prepared for smiles, hugs, blessings and hearty handshakes as the people express their gratitude for the service you are providing. If you have questions, please ask.
More specific details will be forthcoming once we determine how many people can/will go to Sahuaripa. We can only accommodate a certain number of volunteers, as the Mexican government pays for our room and board. As in the past, needed skills and first come, first served will be the guide for selecting the group.
Muchisimas gracias,
Judy Reisman, Secretary
