Meet Dr. Vargas! He has been with Cactus Children’s Clinic for 22 years. We appreciate his knowledge and all the support/education he provides for the families he sees!

See below for his bio:

Dr. Vargas was born and raised in the Bay Area in California. He graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in molecular biology and then went up the road to Stanford University for his MD degree. After training at Seattle Children’s Hospital in pediatrics he returned to practice in San Jose. After marrying a native of New Mexico they decided to move to the Valley of the Sun.

Dr. Vargas is a board certified pediatrician and is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He enjoys educating families about their health and has several interests including pediatric safety. Dr. Vargas lives in Phoenix with his wife Maria and his two children. He enjoys running and is always in the midst of some marathon training, which is a good thing given that he also likes to cook and eat!

Here are the AAP recommendations regarding the measles outbreaks across the US and MMR vaccination for children. Currently, there are four documented cases of measles in Navajo county, Arizona. We will continue to post updates intermittently. Please call the office for inquiries regarding cost of early vaccination if indicated for travel.

We have had lots of questions regarding Nirsevimab for RSV. Here’s what you need to know this season :

💉This is not a traditional “vaccine “. Nirsevimab is a monoclonal antibody that provides passive immunity to RSV.

🦠 It is very effective in decreasing severe RSV disease. During the 23-24 season it decreased RSV related ER visits by 77% and hospitalizations by 81%!

😷Immunity should last about 5 months (about the duration of an RSV season)

🗓️ In the US RSV season is typically Oct - March . (we anticipate giving this immunization Oct 1- March 31)

👶 Who can receive this?
- infants < 8 months during their 1st RSV season whose pregnant parent did not receive the RSV vaccine greater than or equal to 14 days before delivery
