Pitch counts, pitch clocks and mandated rest days. All things aimed at helping pitchers to minimize injury.

Do these things help? Physical Therapist John Ebinger explains how pitch counts do not equal workload and what parents, coaches and other health care providers should look for when it comes to baseball and softball pitchers and injury prevention.

Not all trainers are the same. Help us clear up some confusion.

Athletic trainers are licensed health care professionals with advanced education, who help prevent and treat injuries.

Personal trainers play an important role in fitness and performance, but they don't diagnose or treat injuries.

This National Athletic Training Month, help us educate and advocate for athlete safety, and tell the story of the professionals protecting athletes at every level.

When he was 6 in 2018, Raibron Manuel began speech therapy to become more confident in his communication skills. Since then, Raibron's mom, Marlene, has seen significant growth in her son's willingness to engage and communicate with others.

"He is working on building longer, more complete sentences and continues to grow in sharing his thoughts and ideas," Marlene said.

Raibron's vibrant personality is on display during his speech therapy sessions. He loves to role-play, which is one way to practice conversations.

"Raibron's therapy was not about reaching age-appropriate performance or meeting milestones," Speech-Language Pathologist Marissa Copley shared. "He didn't find those things meaningful."

So, Marissa changed her approach to therapy with Raibron. She met him where he was and worked on his confidence. They addressed clear-speech strategies, practiced conversations with other therapists and kids in the center and used a high-tech, speech-generating device as needed.

Raibron has been discharged and is maximizing his potential, but his family knows he can always return if he needs more assistance!

We are proud he boosted his skills while improving his self-esteem and confidence, too.

When Christian Nickerson rolled through the doors of our Flagstaff - University Avenue center, he was in a depressive state. He hadn't walked in four weeks. He used a walker to move around if he could, but often relied on others to "prop" him up if he had to leave his bed.

Due to a post-surgical brain issue, Christian had lost most function in his right arm and leg. He was unable to walk or lift when he started physical therapy. Slowly, he began to work toward his biggest goal of walking again.

"I worked with both Maral and Andrea through the experience," Christian said about Physical Therapist Maral Abdou and Physical Therapist Assistant Andrea Newsom. "They were like good cop/bad cop, which was the best possible approach for me. Maral was kind and (had) more of an approach at my pace and figuring out what hurt and adjusting it from there. Andrea constantly and aggressively pushed me, but not to a point where I was ever in pain. Let me be clear, both of these approaches were fantastic and worked together perfectly."

Christian noticed improvement at his monthly check-ins. He moved from using a cane to a walker while learning how to better use his left arm as his mobility shifted. The biggest change was to his mindset; physical therapy helped him develop healthier habits.

He's been able to achieve more than what he originally planned; not only is he walking, but he's developed an interest in running. Christian has signed up for a future 5K and is actively training for it. He has surpassed his goals for physical therapy and is doing better than he was before he encountered the brain issues.

"I never thought I was going to laugh during physical therapy, but both therapists helped me come to terms with how hard it was going to be," Christian said, "and I am pretty sure both cried with me at some point. I would absolutely refer this place to anyone, even if I hope that no one ever needs it."

Jean Watson began physical therapy in Minnesota last spring with simple but monumental goals: rebuild her strength after cancer treatment and learn to walk comfortably again.

At that time, she relied heavily on a wheelchair due to severe deconditioning and arthritis in her ankles and hands. When she began the ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation program with certified clinicians, progress felt slow. Jean, however, showed up every session, determined to move forward.

When winter approached and she headed to Florida, Jean refused to let the change in seasons interrupt her recovery. She chose to continue her rehabilitation journey with us, making her progress a priority no matter her location. That decision has made all the difference because the transition was seamless.

Jean’s improvements have been extraordinary. Her strength, balance and endurance have vastly improved. Standing no longer feels overwhelming. She is more confident in her ability to walk. One defining achievement was climbing a step, something she once feared she’d never do again. Jean also loved incorporating BlazePods into her therapy sessions, using them to challenge her standing balance and reaching ability.

One of her long term dreams is to return to driving. She’s not there yet, but each session moves her a little closer.
