Some children who had NICU stays are at higher risk for the areas outlined above.

As the child grows, doctors or caregivers may notice
• Delayed milestones (e.g., not babbling, no first words by 15–18 months)
• Difficulty feeding or swallowing
• Unclear speech
• Trouble following directions or forming sentences

An evaluation by an SLP can help determine whether therapy is needed.

The NICU is a specialized hospital unit that provides intensive medical care to newborn babies who need extra support or are born premature.

The first days and weeks of life are critical for development. The NICU helps:
• Keep babies stable
• Support growth and brain development
• Prevent or treat complications
• Help families care for their newborns
