🌱 Let’s be honest… change is HARD, especially when it comes to something as personal as your hearing.

We hear this all the time:
“I know I need help… I just don’t know if I’m ready.”
“It feels like such a big step.”
“What if everything sounds too loud?”
And you know what? Those feelings are completely normal.
Hearing help isn’t just about a device. It's a change in routine, in confidence, in daily life. And big changes take courage.

But here’s the part we love reminding our patients of:
✨ You don’t have to do it alone. We are here to help.
✨ You get to take it one small step at a time. We schedule follow-up visits.
✨ Your brain is AMAZING at adjusting…sometimes it just needs a little practice.
Sometimes the hardest step… is also the one that changes everything.
🌟If you’re ready (or even curious), please reach out to us. We’re here to help!

During the cooler months of the year, it’s no secret that we see a spike in illnesses: flu, colds, RSV, COVID… you name it. And with illness season comes the usual suspects: boogers, coughs, and sometimes… ear woes. 👎

We consistently see an increase in middle ear fluid during the winter months. Sometimes the fluid behind the middle ear isn’t always easy to see either! This is why one of the most critical (and quickest!) tests we can perform for our patients is called tympanometry.

👂 Tympanometry is a quick, painless test that measures how well your eardrum and middle ear system are functioning.

Why does this matter? Because middle ear issues are worth keeping an eye on. Fluid in the middle ear that isn’t infected can sometimes last up to 6-12 weeks!

We get this question a lot: “Do hearing aids actually help prevent cognitive decline?”

The answer, more and more, is yes, especially if they’re used early.

In fact, a major 2023 study found that using hearing aids was linked to a 48% lower risk of developing dementia in adults with hearing loss. (Source: Lin et al., Lancet Commission, 2023)

That’s a powerful reason to start thinking about hearing health! Can you think of anyone that has been putting off their hearing test?

From our point of view, we see hearing screenings as a really helpful first step, kind of like a “check engine” light. They don’t tell us everything, but they do tell us when it’s time to look closer.

For example, once I saw a patient who had failed a hearing screening. His screening indicated a potential issue, so we scheduled a comprehensive diagnostic hearing test at the clinic. Once we completed that testing, including both air AND bone conduction, it was clear that something was going on in his middle ear!

Because we caught it, we were able to refer him to a specialist. He underwent surgical treatment that significantly improved his hearing.

Stories like this are why we always say: a simple screening can be the first step toward answers. However, a diagnostic test helps us see the FULL PICTURE!

Let’s be honest, hearing aids are tiny tech powerhouses that live in a warm, humid, waxy environment all day. So yes… they need regular cleaning!

👂 Even a little bit of earwax or moisture can block the microphone or speaker, making your hearing aids seem like they "aren’t working right."

Here’s what we recommend:
🔹 Daily: Wipe them down with a soft, dry cloth
🔹 Weekly: Check for wax buildup, clean filters or domes if needed
🔹 Every 3–6 months: Come see us for a professional clean and check
🔹 Once a year: Schedule a full hearing aid tune-up and hearing test

Studies show that 80% of hearing aid repairs are due to moisture or earwax, both preventable with regular maintenance! (Source: American Academy of Audiology)

Need help with cleaning supplies or unsure how to clean yours safely? We’re happy to show you!

It’s a beautiful winter week near the
Ascent Locations here in the western are of the valley in Phoenix, AZ, mild temps and sunny skies! ☀️

Even without snow and ice, hearing aids can still face seasonal challenges. Changes between cooler mornings and indoor heating can lead to moisture or buildup inside your devices.

👉 Quick tip: Store your hearing aids in a dry, protective case overnight to help prevent damage and keep them performing at their best.

We’re here to support your hearing health all year long.

How do you enjoy the winter season in your area of the United States, maybe you are a snow bird in Arizona?

Over time, untreated hearing loss can cause the brain to “reassign” the parts responsible for processing sound. Those areas may start handling other senses instead, like vision.

This shift is what researchers call the Sensory Deprivation Theory.

Basically, if the brain isn’t getting sound input, it finds other things to focus on, and that may impact overall brain function.

Studies using brain imaging show decreased activity in the auditory cortex in people with untreated hearing loss. (Source: Glick & Sharma, 2020)

Keeping those sound pathways active is just one more reason to treat hearing loss early.
