“I kept meaning to get it checked.” 😔

Maybe it was ringing in the ears that came and went. Maybe it was muffled hearing. Maybe hearing aids were not working quite right. These things can seem small at first, but they can have a real impact on quality of life over time.

Better Speech and Hearing Month is a good reminder that our hearing deserves attention, too! 🙌 Tinnitus, earwax buildup, and gradual hearing changes can all make communication harder and increase stress in ways people do not always connect right away.

We want people to know they do not have to wait until hearing problems feel “serious enough.” Early attention can make a meaningful difference.

Our Patient Care Coordinators are often the very first voice you hear and the first face you see, setting the tone for every visit, answering questions, and making sure each person who walks through our doors feels welcomed and cared for.

What many people don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes, the scheduling, problem-solving, juggling a full day, and somehow still making time to truly connect with each patient.

We so grateful to work alongside someone who brings so much heart, patience, and dedication to what they do every single day.

It’s easy to assume smaller hearing aids are always better, but that isn’t always true. Very small devices have limited space for features, power, and speakers, making them less effective for certain hearing losses.

Work environments can highlight challenges you might not notice anywhere else!
A patient once told me, “I feel like everyone at work is mumbling.” 😟 She was in meetings all the time and started pulling back from projects because she was worried she would miss something important and look unprofessional.

For those with untreated hearing loss in situations like these, it is not JUST about hearing. It is about confidence, and how comfortable you feel speaking up and staying engaged.

So we talked through what meetings were like for her day to day, then tested her hearing and reviewed why certain speech clarity issues show up more in group settings, especially when people are not facing you or are talking across the room.

We focused on a plan that would help her follow conversations more easily without feeling like she had to work so hard to keep up. 📝

The win was huge for her. She told me, “I stopped blaming my coworkers for being quiet. Now I can follow conversations even when someone is turned toward the whiteboard.”

Even better, she said her confidence at work had completely changed. She was participating more, speaking up, and no longer second guessing herself. 🥹💓

introduce someone you may not see while in the office, however, he is
essential in helping us provide patients with the best care possible.
Meet Christopher!

Christopher is one of our billing specialists for Ascent! We are so
thankful to have him on our team and appreciate the support and care
he shows for our team and patients!

A typical day at work for Christopher starts by verifying eligibility
and benefits for the upcoming patients of the day. This takes most of
his day, but when he finishes, he spends his remaining time reviewing
the previous day's visits to prepare them for insurance submissions.

As audiologist's, we spend a lot of time talking with patients about something many people do not realize: when hearing becomes harder, listening becomes work!

During Better Speech and Hearing Month, I think it is important to remind you that hearing health is closely tied to overall well-being. When the brain has to strain to fill in missing sounds and piece together speech, it can leave you feeling tired, frustrated, and less interested in social situations. 😔

We often see this show up in everyday life first… dinner with friends feels overwhelming, meetings take more energy, and background noise suddenly feels like too much.

That is why we believe hearing care is about so much more than ears. It is about making daily life feel easier, lighter, and more connected again. 🫶

Once in a while, a patient tells you something that really sticks with you. ⬇️

He said, “Last year, when I went on my morning walks, I could hear a group of chickadees chirping. Now I can see them, but I don’t hear them.” 🤨

When changes are gradual, your brain fills in the gaps and it becomes your new normal without you even realizing it!

So we walked through what he had been noticing (or not), then tested his hearing and discussed how softer environmental sounds often fade first. It is not that those sounds disappear… it is that they become harder to pick up.

This is the part that stuck with me 👉 When he came back for his follow-up visit, he told me, “I could hear my footsteps on the gravel and a bird chirping three houses down. I didn’t realize how much life I had been missing. I thought it would be loud, but it’s very natural sounding!”
