Summer Safety Tip #4: Wear Sunscreen 🧴☀️

Sunburn weakens your skin’s natural protection and can increase your risk of heat-related illnesses. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30—and don’t forget to use more if you’re swimming or sweating!

Did you know?
To protect your skin from sunburn, reapply sunscreen every two hours!

Meet Melissa Santoyo, our Emergency Department Nurse Assistant, who knows how to help patients feel at ease when they need it most:

"I make it a priority to treat every patient with empathy, respect, and clear communication. It is often the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference during their time with us in the ER. I take the time to listen to their concerns, explain what’s happening, and offer my reassurance whenever it’s needed.

As someone who is bilingual and fluent in Spanish, I've learned how valuable it is to speak to patients in their own language. It helps build trust and ease their fear, especially in an unfamiliar environment where they may feel alone. I always try to see the person beyond their medical issue and create a moment of human connection."

Congratulations to our February 2025 DAISY Award Winner, Karla Cuyuch Barrios, RN! Over the last five years, Karla has enjoyed working in different departments at Adventist Health Glendale and has now been in Cath Lab Pre-Op for just over a year.

The DAISY Award program was established in 1999 to thank and recognize nurses for outstanding, compassionate care. Nurses may be nominated by anyone in the organization, including patients and family members — anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.

An anonymous patient's family submitted, "We were blessed to have Karla assigned to us. She demonstrated amazing, compassionate care to my dad. She was very empathetic and had lots of patience with all the questions we had. Her kind character made everything more at ease."

Meet Shay Keys, our Emergency Department Technician, who knows how to help patients feel at ease when they need it most:

“As an Emergency Department Tech, I try to show up with patience, presence, and kindness in every moment. Whether I’m taking vitals, helping in a trauma, or just bringing a warm blanket, I want people to feel like they’re not alone.

I follow the AIDET approach: I start by acknowledging the patient, introducing myself and my role, letting them know what to expect and how long it might take, explaining things clearly, and most importantly, thanking them for trusting us at Adventist Health Glendale. A little care can go a long way.”

When emergencies happen, our team is ready to care for you.

Meet Ani Amiryan, our Emergency Department Interpreter, who knows how to help patients feel at ease when they need it most:

"As an interpreter, I know I am not just bridging a language gap — I am helping people feel seen, heard, and understood in some of their most vulnerable moments. I always try to go the extra mile by showing empathy and being fully present. Whether it’s offering a comforting smile, taking a moment to explain things more gently, or simply listening as a patient shares their fears, I try to treat every person the way I would want my own family to be treated. It’s important to me that patients not only hear the words, but truly feel the care behind them.”

Summer Safety Tip #3: Keep Cool and Covered 🕶️☀️

Beat the heat this summer by wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics. For added protection from the sun, don’t forget your sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat!

Did you know?
Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight better than dark colors, helping you stay cool outside!

When emergencies happen, our team is ready to care for you.

Meet Trinh Hoang, our Emergency Department Nurse, who knows how to help patients feel at ease when they need it most:

"One of the most stressful parts of coming to the emergency department is not knowing what to expect. I make it a priority to keep my patients informed about each step to help ease their anxiety. I also take time to explain medical terms in simple, clear language so patients and their families feel more involved in their care. It’s the small things — like bringing an extra warm blanket or apple juice — that help patients feel especially cared for."

After Robert Hudson was struck by a car two years ago, he was given the devastating news that he would never play the bass again. With his arm shattered, ribs broken, and a rod placed in his leg, Robert was transferred to the Acute Physical Rehab unit at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial.

During his month stay, Robert said he was showered with love and care from the APR staff. “I had an amazing experience here. I couldn't have asked for a better team,” Robert said. “Any needs that I had; they took care of them. The professionalism was great.”

Robert worked closely with recreational therapist Julie Sum, doing daily activities to improve his mental and physical abilities. And despite being told by a previous clinician that we would never play bass again, Robert had a goal. “I told Julie once I got healed up that I would come back and bring some musicians."

Robert kept his promise. “It took a little while, but I made it back," he said. And on a Friday afternoon, now fully healed and mobile, Robert and a group of talented musicians played an incredible jazz and R&B set for the current APR patients.

From being a past patient to now serving as an inspiration to current ones, Robert said he was elated to share the love that he had received from the team here. "I am so thankful to this hospital. The love that they showed me, I can't even put into words.”

Thank you to Robert and his group for a wonderful afternoon of music!

During his 25 visits to the Adventist Health Hanford emergency room over the first five months in 2024, Frank was hopeless. He was experiencing severe heart failure and homelessness, and he was using m**h. His ER visits took hundreds of police, paramedic, staff, and physician hours. Each visit included many tests and treatments. And he was angry, often shouting profanity at his caregivers.

Because of his diagnosis and situation, Frank qualified for new Enhanced Care Management services through his Medi-Cal managed care plan. The services — and the Adventist Health lead care manager they brought into his life — would make all the difference.

Read our blog to learn about Frank's transformation and about how our CommunityConnect program is making a difference.

Frank was struggling with health issues and substance abuse. The services — and the lead care manager they brought into his life — would make all the difference.
