Happy International Day of the Midwife
In my course Reclaiming Childbirth, we explore and compare depictions of the mother-midwife relationship from the past and present. Images transmit and reflect culture and social perceptions of roles and responsibilities in the childbirth rite of passage. In this 8th century sculpture, the mother is central, and the midwife is tiny, sitting by her feet catching the baby.

Vetch...pea family.
Most of the plant is edible. Young shoots can be eaten raw or cooked like spinach. The flowers can be eaten raw or dried and are quite tasty. Use the flower as garnish on cakes or make into tea. Found growing wild pretty widely throught California, in fields and yards alike.

Yellow Dock=Curley Dock=Rumex Crispus
High in iron, great for anemia.
Found growing in fields and hillsides.
Identified by long (10in) wavy leaf with reddish highlights. They start with one or two shoots that soon become huge clumps, growing a tall green stalk (5ft) with seed heads that turn rust colored in late summer and fall and a taproot that is bright yellow. The spring leaf has a sour flavour and is edible in very small amounts in salads. Due to high volumes of oxalic acid however, large amounts need to be boiled before ingested. Sees in fall/winter can be easily harvested and milled for flour. Roots (best harvest in fall/winter)are used primarily for tincture to draw out the iron content and combined with other herbs like dandelion or stingingnettle. Research before use!

Dandelion.
First foods for bees and other pollinators.
Root, leaf, flower, seed all edible from this happy herb; containing antioxidants, vitamins A, B12, and C along with minerals of sodium and iron. Identified by its sunny yellow flower that turns into a fluffy, airy seed head in the late summer and fall and the long jagged bright green leaf. Can be found just about everywhere. Spring greens are the tastiest before bloom and can be eaten raw or cooked. Flower heads make beautiful jelly and fritters. Roots make great tincture and can be boiled or steamed. Mill seeds into flour or blow on the fluff to spread this herb and make a wish! Only harvest from non-poisoned areas.

Plantain Herb
The bee sting bandaid. Identified by its long, ribbed, lance shaped leaf. Found in most yards and fields, growing in clumps. Young leaf is edible but the older it gets the more stringy and fiberous. Harvest fresh leaf and mash into a pultice or cover with oil and make salve. Used to draw out bee sting, bug bite, splinters and the like. My favorite base herb to use in skin salves. Only harvest from non-poisoned areas.

Shepheard's Purse.
From the mustard family. Easily identify this lovely herb from its heart shaped "fruits" or leafs and small white flowers on top of a thin stem growing up to 20 inches tall. Usually found growing in patches in fields. Harvest by pinching off the first few inches; dried or fresh, can be eaten, made into tea, mashed for poultice or tincture for strongest preparation. Used in small doses to help stop all manner of bleeding; both internally and externally.
Please research this herb before use.
