In addition to the medications used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, it’s common to include physical therapy into your treatment plan.

The goal of physical therapy is to assist the patient in reducing the severity of their symptoms and live a more independent life.

Some of the ways physical therapists can help patients with Parkinson’s are:

- Manual therapy and massage to decrease pain and muscle stiffness
- Stretching to improve joint and muscle range of motion to improve quality and control of motion
- Gait training to improve gait technique and reduce the common shuffling pattern
- Balance training to improve safety during activities such as walking outside or navigating through crowds

Our physical therapists will develop an individualized treatment plan that can help reduce muscle stiffness and improve mobility, posture, balance, and gait.

Did you know BPPV is the most common cause for the sudden onset of vertigo/dizziness?

This is due to “crystals” in the canal that are causing symptoms when you move or change positions.

Physical therapy can help resolve your vertigo BUT did you know that it is common to have dizziness after the “crystals” are gone?

Residual dizziness feels like a different form of dizziness and can also be resolved with the help of a vestibular specialized PT!

Do you have episodes of dizziness that comes and goes?

Does your dizziness fluctuate and last for several days to weeks?

Is your dizziness debilitating?

You may have what we call “vestibular migraines”. You do not need to have a headache or migraine symptoms as it can just present as dizziness.

A vestibular specialized PT can help with this diagnosis as well as help reduce your dizziness/episodes!

A common feeling of dizziness, imbalance, or vertigo can be relieved with the help of physical therapy.

Exercises can include:
Vision stability training
Posture training
Stretching and strengthening exercises
Walking exercises
Neck mobility
Ergonomic training

Often, PT exercises and rehabilitation are the only treatment needed to significantly decrease Vestibular symptoms.

No two treatment plans are exactly the same, so working one-on-one with a physical therapist can be very helpful during your road to recovery.

TMD may result from trauma, postural issues, or dental issues associated with myofascial pain, internal arrangement of the joint, or arthritis and often feels like locking, catching, or stiffness in the jaw.

Your physical therapist will recommend several different modalities to help ease pain, lessen daily stress on the jaw and regain normal jaw movement.

Another way to improve function after an ankle sprain is to do a four-way ankle exercise using a stretch band.

Working with a physical therapist can help to quicken your recovery time and prevent re-injury to the ankle.

After an ankle sprain, you might notice an increased range of motion.

One way to improve this is by practicing an ankle driver exercise by using an elevated surface to help you (see video).

Try doing 10-15 reps for 2-3 sets giving your body time to adjust and improve range of motion.

Speak with a physical therapist today to learn more about strengthening and rehab exercises specific to your ankle sprain.
