Came to the decision this week that I had made too many beautiful cutting boards for others, while I myself still used plastic mats to cut on in the kitchen. That became my motivation to make the most beautiful boards I have ever made! Heres what that inspiration turned into. Two custom end grain boards that are made from Black Walnut and Hard Maple. Measuring about 2" thick and have recessed rubber feet on bottom for grip. These will now be what I use with my Shun knives each day. The adhesive used is food safe and waterproof. Finished with food-grade Mineral Oil as well.

What do you think??

Heres some of the steps involved in making this highly patterned end grain cutting board. Quick summary of steps: mill wood, glue up flat, cut angles, plane opposing sides so that the whole square block is angled, glue together with pattern, mill again to remove glue squeeze out, cut and flip over 90 degrees while alternating pieces for true pattern. Then you get this. Lots of precision. Final pictures to come soon...

Milled the wood and glued it up into one solid beam for the mantel. Tomorrow ill take it out of the clamps and mill to final dimensions. Then I can begin drilling holes for the heavy duty hardware that will hold it

Fun fact... theres roughly $1000 of clamps in that picture 🤣. Can never have too many clamps

Getting back in the zone. Lots of beautiful walnut wood that will soon become a solid 6" x 6" x 70" mantle for above our fireplace. Many people make hollow mantles, but I opted for solid.

The reason I've been so quiet is because we had a house flood last holiday season, and all year my time has been going towards home renovations. Most of it isn't applicable here. But - here's something using wood at least. Rebuilt our fireplace structure. Next will come a small bench seat and a mantle using walnut wood (top of bench will be stone)... after that the whole thing will get stone tile. Eventually I will build custom cabinets and floating shelves for the left and right sides

Delivery of this beauty happened today! Having such a massive piece of furniture that needs to fit into a precise space takes some careful planning but in the end it worked out. I'll be a bit quiet on here for a while as I have wrist Surgery in two weeks and will need to recover for a couple months. But after that... I will be making my most ambitious dual purpose gaming/dining table yet! Will be made of exotic Sapele wood and will be an expanding table that when open will be 14' long and when not expanded will be 9' long.

Getting close to the finish line. this Banquette is massive. For reference... my workbench is 10' long and 32" wide lol. Rubio Cotton White is the finish (so far only applied to the front, not the top)

Productive evening in the shop... made the 3 drawer fronts for the banquette project.

These are things where I go crazy on the small details. For example, the central frame of each drawer comes from same panel and the grain flows from 1 to the next because of how they were cut. Then the outer frames (rails/stiles) of the drawer fronts all come from 1 board to have perfect color match. The 3 top long rails and the 3 bottom long rails all have grain flow from 1 to the next if you put them side by side. Its details like this that elevate a project... even if you cant quite identify it when you see it. On the other hand, it is super easy to tell when a piece of a drawer is from a different board and the color does not match - that is a pet peeve of mine.

In the beginning stages of a new commission. This will be a Banquette for a dining room and is all gonna be made of White Oak. I strategically formed the front panel so that #1 it has perfect grain flow all the way across since I sourced long boards (what will be 115" when cut). This gives a design that is seamless and clean. #2 I segmented the middle portion so that when I glued it up, the cutouts for the drawers are already there without any more effort cutting them out later, while still being perfectly symmetrical. Next up will be attaching the 1/4" thick decorative moulding that will go on the bottom of this and then the front panel is basically done (aside from being cut to final dimension)
