Range of motion (ROM) is a critical measurement that reflects how far and how well a joint or body part can move within its normal limits. Healthy ROM is essential for performing daily activities and maintaining physical function. However, when ROM is compromised—whether due to injury, overuse, inflammation, or underlying conditions—it can lead to pain, stiffness, and even a significant loss of mobility.

Disruptions in ROM can stem from several factors, such as muscle imbalances, joint dysfunction, or restrictions in surrounding connective tissues. Over time, untreated limitations can contribute to further complications, including compensatory movement patterns that place added stress on other areas of the body.

Addressing ROM issues early is key to preventing these cascading effects. With targeted therapies like joint mobilization, stretching, strengthening exercises, and even fascial manipulation, it’s possible to restore functional movement and reduce discomfort.

If you’re struggling with limited ROM or experiencing related pain and stiffness, our team can assess the underlying cause and create a personalized plan to support your recovery.

Cold weather got you feeling stiff? Don't hibernate! Staying active this winter keeps your joints happy and your muscles relaxed.
When you move, you increase tissue metabolism and improve lubrication, which keeps you flexible and reduces those nagging aches. So bundle up, take a walk, or stretch it out—your body will thank you come spring! Throughout the seasons we offer a treatment called Fascial Manipulation, or FM, where we identify specific points of tension or dysfunction. Through deep tissue muscle work, we use friction and heat to “melt” the densifications in the fascia to promote healing and provide pain relief in affected areas.

When temperatures drop, so does your mobility. Fascia and muscles stiffen in colder weather, leading to aches and limited range of motion come spring.

The fix? Keep active now. Prioritize simple movements, stretching routines, heat (like sauna or steam rooms) and activities like winter sports or strength training to stay limber and strong.

Need extra support? Mile High Sports Chiropractic offers expert care to keep you performing at your best—through winter and beyond.

When temperatures drop, the body responds. Cold causes soft tissues—like muscles and fascia (the connective tissue around your joints)—to contract and stiffen. This restricts movement, increases pressure on your nerves and joints, and often triggers pain or soreness.

At Mile High Sports Chiropractic, we address this problem using Fascial Manipulation (FM). FM is a targeted method that reduces tissue stiffness by applying friction and pressure to restore normal movement.

Most patients notice significant relief in just 2-3 sessions. Don’t let the cold slow you down this season.

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, the body’s largest nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. While it is often associated with nerve compression from conditions like herniated discs or spinal stenosis, recent studies reveal that tension or densification in the body’s fascial tissues could also play a role. Fascial tissues surround and support muscles, nerves, and organs, and when they become stiff or restricted, they can irritate nearby nerve endings, including those of the sciatic nerve. This highlights the importance of addressing both nerve and fascial health when managing sciatica. Dr. Matt has had extensive training in fascia treatment from the highly esteemed Stecco family research institute in Italy.

During the colder months, it’s easy to slip into a sedentary routine. But keeping your body active is essential for maintaining healthy tissues, flexible joints, and relaxed muscles throughout the winter.

When you move regularly:
✅ Tissue metabolism increases, allowing for better lubrication in your joints.
✅ Reduced viscosity (thinner fluid) makes movement smoother and easier.
✅ Muscles stay relaxed, helping to minimize stiffness and pain.

Staying active now ensures that when spring arrives, you’ll be ready to move without stiffness or discomfort. Simple activities like stretching, walking, or gentle workouts can make all the difference.

Ski season is in full swing here in Colorado—are you ready to perform your best and stay injury-free all winter?
As we settle into the New Year, it’s a great time to focus on staying active, healthy, and ready for every activity—whether you’re a pro athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone gifted you an outdoor experience this year.

Research shows that preseason injury prevention care dramatically reduces downtime. In one study, athletes who received targeted treatment for ankle injuries missed no more than 2 days of activity, while untreated athletes missed 6+ days, including season-ending injuries (Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, 2019).

At Mile High Sports Chiropractic, Dr. Matt identifies restricted fascia and past injury patterns that could be holding you back or increasing your risk of injury. This proactive approach not only helps keep you on the slopes but also improves your overall performance.

Make this your strongest season yet with Mile High Sports Chiropractic!

Tech Term Tuesday: Dry needling

Dry needling is a targeted therapeutic technique used to relieve muscle pain, improve mobility, and reduce tension. By inserting fine needles into trigger points, this method stimulates healing and releases tight muscle knots.

Dr. Matt has recently completed his inital training in dry needling, adding to his understanding of this treatment methodology to the list of tools he can tap into based off individual client presentations. It will take some time before this service can be offered in clinic, but we're excited for the potential it has in addressing chronic pain, sports injuries, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Radiculopathy vs. Referred Pain: What’s the Difference?

While radiculopathy and referred pain can feel similar, they have distinct causes and require different treatments:

Radiculopathy is nerve pain caused by compression or irritation of a nerve root, often from conditions like herniated discs or spinal stenosis. Symptoms may include sharp, radiating pain, tingling, or numbness along the nerve pathway.
Treatment: Therapies such as spinal decompression, dry needling, and fascial manipulation can relieve pressure on the nerve and restore function.

Referred Pain originates from an issue in one part of the body but is felt in another area. For example, a shoulder injury might cause pain in the upper back.
Treatment: Addressing the underlying issue with targeted soft tissue therapies and corrective exercises often resolves the pain.

If you’re experiencing unexplained pain, Dr. Matt can help determine the cause and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Double crush syndrome occurs when a nerve is compressed at two or more points, often leading to symptoms like numbness, tingling, or weakness in that limb. This can happen when both the neck and wrist (or elbow) compress a nerve, as seen with carpal tunnel syndrome. It can also occur similarly in the lower limb.

80% of our peripheral nerves are autonomic, so in most cases, we have no direct symptoms with a single-site nerve compression. If it begins closer to the body, this can start as thoracic outlet syndrome with similar symptoms mentioned above, possibly including coldness in that limb. In some cases, this can eventually lead to numb patches on the skin, often in combination with pain near or above that area.

Poor posture, repetitive strain, or injury, often with overuse, are common causes of double crush syndrome. Fascial manipulation is our primary treatment for this condition, addressing restrictions in the connective tissue where the nerves pass through that contribute to nerve compression. By releasing tension along the fascial pathways, this technique helps relieve pressure on the nerves, restoring proper function and alleviating symptoms at multiple compression sites. A combination of specific exercises after release can compound to give long-lasting results.
