Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten consumption, causing the immune system to damage the small intestine's lining. Research shows that strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is currently the only effective treatment for managing celiac disease and preventing long-term complications.

Studies indicate that even trace amounts of gluten can trigger immune responses in people with celiac disease, making careful attention to food labels and cross-contamination essential. Complete gluten avoidance typically leads to intestinal healing within several months to years, depending on the severity of initial damage.

Ongoing research explores additional therapeutic approaches beyond dietary management, including enzyme supplements and medications that may reduce gluten sensitivity or protect the intestinal lining. These investigations offer potential future options for people living with celiac disease.

Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance and/or inadequate insulin secretion, leading to chronic hyperglycemia. Evidence shows that structured lifestyle interventions focused on dietary weight loss, supported by physical activity, improve glycemic control and can delay or reduce the need for medication intensification.

Modest weight loss of about 3–7% improves insulin sensitivity and HbA1c, while larger losses (≥10%) provide greater metabolic benefits and may induce remission in some individuals. Regular assessment of glycemia using HbA1c, with individualized use of glucose monitoring, remains important for limiting long-term complications.

Ongoing development of pharmacological therapies targeting multiple pathways of glucose metabolism continues to expand options for individualized management and improved quality of life.

Medical research advances when it includes people from all backgrounds and body types. Does this resonate with you?

We're building a community of individuals with a BMI of 27 or above who are interested in contributing to metabolic health research. Your registration helps us understand who's interested in participating and allows us to connect you with relevant trials as they become available.

Clinical research has historically lacked diversity in body representation. By registering your interest, you're helping change that and supporting the development of treatments that reflect real world populations.

There's no commitment when you register. It simply means we can reach out when trials matching your profile are enrolling.
