What is Ageism?

The term was coined in 1968 by Robert N. Butler, MD, a gerontologist, psychiatrist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and it refers to a basic denial of older people’s human rights. Though it has been against the law to discriminate against older people in the workplace since 1967 when Congress passed the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, it still happens frequently, says Ursula Staudinger, Ph.D., founding director of the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University in New York City.
Ageism Where You Least Expect It.

While workplace ageism may be the most blatant form, older Americans also encounter ageism in public settings, and even in their own families. For example, when older people shop, sales clerks often assume they have all the time in the world and ignore them in favor of younger customers. And they may even face this discrimination in their own families.

The Dangers of Seniors Living alone

According to AARP, nearly 90% of people over age 65 want to stay at home for as long as possible. Living at home and staying in a familiar community may offer benefits to seniors’ emotional well-being — but research indicates that a staggering number of seniors who should be receiving assisted living care are still living at home — in many cases, alone. To some of us, the answer may seem obvious: make the move to an assisted living community where social activity, health monitoring, and medication management are all included. However, moving to senior living can be a difficult decision, particularly if your loved one is not keen on moving. For more information, read our guide to assisted living vs. in-home care. The Administration on Aging reports that about 29%, or 11.3 million older adults lived alone in 2010. At the same time, it’s estimated that over 12% of seniors 65 and older — more than 5 million — need assistance with long-term care to perform activities of daily life. Read more at:

Caring for the Caregiver

November is National Family Caregivers Month. Each year, we take this opportunity to honor the millions of people in the U.S. who do so much to support the well-being of older parents, spouses with disabilities, and other loved ones.

This year, the load was especially heavy for family caregivers. Whether their loved one lives with them, or independently in their own home, or in a senior living community, family caregivers have been scrambling to keep these elders safe and connected. Many have had less help this year and have been virtually on their own as other families quarantined and were unable to visit. Even before the pandemic, family caregivers often neglected their own medical care and healthy lifestyle recommendations—and this year has been even more challenging.

One item that can easily sink to the bottom of a family caregiver’s to-do list is exercise. Much research shows that the stress and workload of family caregiving increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression, dementia, and even early death. Exercise lowers the risk. And yet, the busy day of a caregiver can pass so quickly that there is no time for physical activity.

Beginning July 1st 2016, physicians must document a face-to-face encounter with a patient to validate Medicaid coverage for home health services and medical equipment. A similar rule has long been in effect for Medicare. The final regulations released Wednesday imposing a similar rule for Medicaid come nearly five years after the CMS first proposed the policy under a provision of the Affordable Care Act. To validate the need for coverage under the new rule, a physician must document that a face-to-face patient encounter took place no more than 90 days before, or 30 days after, the start of home health services

The likelihood of using long term care services increases as we age or if we are disabled. So, planning ahead for your own or a loved one’s long term care is best, but that may not be possible for everyone. Finding a way to pay for long term care is a major concern because it can be expensive, particularly nursing home care. Many people prefer alternatives to nursing home care, such as assisted living arrangements or home health care and other community services......
