✨Social media has changed the way we view massage therapy, and sometimes not for the better. If you are considering massage therapy, but are overwhelmed and intimidated by the “massage imagery” you are seeing, you are not alone!

✨Instagram or TikTok massage influencers often show highly stylized videos of themselves, with photogenic models, minimal draping, and borderline inappropriate techniques or table gymnastics. These videos, while provocative, do not show the reality of therapeutic massage in the real world. So we want to share what to truly expect from a massage therapy session.

✨Draping: Professional draping sets a supportive boundary for both the client and the practitioner. Here in New York, the draping guidelines are strict. Clients remain covered with a top sheet, with only the area (i.e., the back or leg) undraped and securely tucked for comfort. With the exception of techniques such as esalen or lomi lomi, you should be covered in more than just a towel over your private areas. In the event that abdominal massage is requested, a special drape to securely cover the breasts will be used. Your comfort is non-negotiable.

✨Dress: The amount of clothing you choose to remove is up to you. Some clients fully disrobe. This is acceptable. If you need hip and low back work, this allows the practitioner to access vital structures. However, some clients prefer to leave undergarments on. This is OK too! We can work around clothing. In fact, some clients leave on leggings, socks, or sports bras. This is all OK! We will adapt to your needs. (Some massage therapists or establishments require the clients leave their underwear on. This is a counter reaction to the unfortunate connection the massage therapy industry has with the s*x trade- communication is key when discussing your treatment.

✨Technique: Massage therapists may utilize a variety of styles and techniques, but most will utilize their hands, fingers, and forearms for the bodywork. Some techniques do not require oil, others do. While some techniques involve using feet or the therapist climbing on the table (i.e., ashiatsu, Sarga Bodywork, etc.), in most cases, your therapist will keep their feet on the floor. Discuss with your practitioner which technique, style, and pressure works best.

✨Your Body: Lastly, clients come in all shapes and sizes and live all different types of lifestyles. Most are not supermodels. A professional practitioner respects your body no matter what. The massage treatment room is a non-judgment zone. Tables can be adjusted to fit your size and shape so you can enjoy a massage at any size, safely and confidently.
