Very sad news to report that we lost Board Member Trip Lane's sister, Busy Lane Zachar, to melanoma this week. Busy and Trip both have BAP1 gene tumor predisposition syndrome. We are very sorry for their family's loss and wish them peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Interesting concept - creating a new type of sunscreen to wear inside after being in the sun to further combat the negative effects of UV rays.

When UV light hits the skin , it causes a type of DNA damage known as CPD, which makes it difficult for cells to copy and repair their DNA correctly.

During UV exposure, many CPDs are instantly created in skin cells, but the DNA is able to repair itself by removing them and replacing with normal DNA melanocytes.

Melanocytes continued to generate CPDs for SEVERAL HOURS after UV exposure has ended. “The imperfect melanin strategy does serve to spread CPDs out over time, which may be better than occurring all at once during sun exposure and possibly overwhelming the DNA repair system,” said Dr. Brash of Yale Cancer Center.

It also creates an opportunity. The delayed pathways should be interceptable at several points, creating an opening for an “evening-after” sunscreen that might prevent the enzyme activation or divert the energy from the excited electron into heat before it can damage DNA.

This will be an interesting subject to follow.
