Christy Matusiak DC

Christy Matusiak DC I help patients achieve their health goals and overcome mental, physical and nutritional challenges Because I seek to correct the cause, and not its effect.

Dr. Matusiak feels that utilizing AK sets her apart from other chiropractors who will often use pain-suppressing modalities that do not entirely address the underlying cause for your symptoms. Her practice emphasizes spinal and extremity manipulation, muscle work, cranial/TMJ corrections, reflexology, meridian balancing, energy healing, nutrition, and lifestyle modification to enhance overall health. Practicing in Wilmette, IL with Integrated Holistic Healthcare, Dr. Christy Matusiak, D.C. aims to help patients return to an active and rewarding lifestyle as quickly as possible without the use of drugs or surgery. She understands that the healing process extends beyond pain relief/symptom reduction and strongly believes in educating and motivating patients to make lifestyle changes that will prevent future injury or illness. Why I am a doctor of Chiropractic

Because I honor the inborn potential of everyone to be truly healthy. Because I desire to help the newborn, the aged, and those without hope. Because I choose to care for the patient with the disease, not the disease. Because I wish to assist rather than intrude; to free rather than control. Because I know that doctors do not heal, only the body can heal itself. Because I have been called to serve others. Because I want to make a difference. Because every day I get to witness miracles. Because I know it is right.

-William Esteb

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and
prevention of disease.”

Iron & ferritin testing is about more than anemia.

These labs aren’t always run by standard doctors, but they’re incredibly important . . . especially if you’re dealing with deep fatigue, muscle weakness, inflammation, or chronic stress 😓

A basic CBC can look “normal,” yet you can still be iron or ferritin deficient.

👉 Ferritin = iron storage
👉 Low levels mean your body is depleted, even without anemia

Low iron or ferritin can also point to poor digestion or absorption, chronic inflammation, or hidden stressors in the body.

These markers give us valuable clues about what’s happening beneath the surface, not just whether you meet the criteria for anemia.

✍️ One thing to note: insurance often won’t cover iron or ferritin unless iron deficiency is already diagnosed, so it’s worth checking what’s included in your labs.

Bottom line: don’t skip iron and ferritin.

Hormone testing isn’t one-size-fits-all . . . especially for women.

Yes, we do often look at hormones like progesterone, estradiol, and testosterone.
But no, I don’t automatically run them on every woman every time we draw labs.

Why? Because timing and context matter.

If you’re ⬇️
▫️Newly postpartum
▫️Coming off the pill or an IUD
▫️Using hormonal birth control

Your labs may not reflect what your body is truly doing yet. In those cases, testing too soon can give misleading data - or be a waste of time and money.

Another issue?
👉 Hormone “normal” ranges are VERY wide.
So wide that a result can fall “in range” while you still feel completely off.

That’s why labs are never just numbers to me.

You’re not a piece of paper.

If you’re saying 🗣️
“Something feels different.”
“I don’t feel like myself.”
“This started months ago…”

That matters. Labs must be interpreted alongside symptoms, thyroid function, and the full clinical picture.

And let’s talk about testosterone - because this one gets ignored a lot in women.
It’s often dismissed as a “male hormone,” yet women actually have higher measurable levels of testosterone than progesterone. As we age, those levels decline - and tracking them over time gives us powerful insight into energy, mood, muscle, libido, and resilience through perimenopause and menopause.

Is hormone testing perfect?
No. This is not an exact science.

But having data + history + how you feel which gives us direction . . . and that’s how we support your body intelligently.

Here’s why cortisol matters ⬇️

Western medicine tends to see cortisol in only two extremes:
▫️Addison’s disease - dangerously low cortisol
▫️Cushing’s syndrome - dangerously high cortisol

But here’s the problem…
👉 Most people live in the gray area in between.

That gray area is called cortisol dysregulation . . . and it’s incredibly common.

When cortisol is off, it can drive ⬇️
⚠️ Chronic inflammation
⚠️ Blood sugar instability
⚠️ Hormonal imbalances
⚠️ Thyroid dysfunction
⚠️ Fatigue, anxiety, and burnout

I see this constantly in thyroid cases:
If TSH is elevated but thyroid hormones look “normal,” I almost always look at cortisol.

High cortisol 🟰your brain is under stress.
Your pituitary is basically yelling at your thyroid:
“WE ARE NOT OK. PLEASE HELP.” ❌

That stress can come from many sources, including but not limited to emotional overload, chronic life demands (work, kids, responsibilities), underlying infections, or a stress response the body can’t properly turn off.

💥Cortisol being high is not the problem - it’s a signal! This is one lab I don’t like to skip.

Questions below 👇

I hear this all the time:

🗣️ “I feel like I have thyroid symptoms, but my labs are normal.”

PSA ⚠️ A “normal” TSH does NOT mean your thyroid is healthy.

Most conventional doctors only run TSH - but TSH is not a thyroid hormone.
It’s a pituitary hormone from your brain telling your thyroid what to do.

Here’s why ⬇️
Your body doesn’t actually use T4.
It must be converted into T3, the active hormone your cells rely on.

That’s why my minimum thyroid panel includes:
✔️TSH
✔️Free T4
✔️Free T3

Without these, you can have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism - fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss - even with a “normal” TSH.

And I don’t stop there ⬇️
I also like to check:
✔️Total T4
✔️Total T3
✔️Reverse T3 (inactive form that can block T3)
✔️Thyroid antibodies

This matters even more for women‼️Autoimmune thyroid issues, like Hashimoto’s, are often overlooked when antibodies aren’t checked 😱

If you haven’t had a FULL thyroid panel, the story isn’t complete.

✋ Don’t let anyone rule out your thyroid without running the right tests.

Stay tuned! More on hidden thyroid disruptors coming soon . . .

These labs are often NOT tested by conventional doctors.
Sometimes they can be covered by insurance (depending on diagnosis), but more importantly - they act as early warning signs for:

🧠 Brain health
❤️ Cardiovascular health
🧬 Hormones
🩸 Blood sugar & insulin resistance
🦠 Gut health . . and more!

If we miss these, we miss the bigger picture - systemic inflammation - which is the precursor to nearly all chronic disease.

The 3 markers I want you to know 👇

1️⃣ hs-CRP (High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein)
This reflects systemic inflammation.
I like to keep this below 0.8.
Anything higher tells us the body is under stress - potentially linked to fatty liver, cardiovascular strain, or brain inflammation.

2️⃣ Homocysteine
If this is above 8, we need to dig deeper.
Often tied to nutrient deficiencies - especially B6, B12, and folate - and commonly seen in people with an MTHFR mutation (about 50% of the population).
When this pathway is impaired, inflammation rises.

3️⃣ Uric Acid
I prefer this below 4.
Yes, it’s associated with gout - but it’s also a metabolic and inflammatory marker.
When elevated, it’s a dashboard warning light that blood sugar, inflammation, or metabolic balance is off.

✨ These labs don’t diagnose disease - they help us prevent it.

Get curious. Get tested.
And I’ll see you here tomorrow 💛

🧪 Today I’m covering TWO key lab markers for blood sugar regulation:

Hemoglobin A1c
Fasting Insulin

Most doctors will run A1c (and yes, it’s important). Some still rely only on fasting glucose from a CMP - but glucose alone does not give the full picture of blood sugar health.

Here’s why 👇
You can have a normal A1c and still have elevated fasting insulin.

That tells us:
⚠️ Insulin resistance is developing
⚠️ You’re trending toward pre-diabetes
⚠️ Intervention is needed before diagnosis

This is powerful information - because it means you don’t have to wait.

You don’t need to wait until:
• Your A1c hits 6.0
• You’re labeled diabetic
• Metformin or GLP-1 drugs are the only options

📌 Fasting insulin should be LOW!
Optimal range is ~2-4.
When fasting, insulin should be quiet - because there’s no sugar coming in.

An insulin of 10?
Not a diagnosis yet, but it is* a warning sign. And warnings are gifts when we act early.

✨ Bottom line:
A1c is a great marker - I absolutely support running it.
But it should always be paired with fasting insulin to truly assess blood sugar regulation.
Remember, knowledge = prevention! 🙌

Stay tuned for the next marker in this series 👀

Yes, a standard lipid panel is important. It gives us insight into cardiovascular risk and plaque formation . . . but it is not the whole story.

Most doctors focus on total cholesterol (often flagging anything over 200), but a lipid panel actually includes:
• Total cholesterol
• HDL (“good” cholesterol)
• LDL (“bad” cholesterol)
• Triglycerides

Here’s where it gets more interesting 👇

I don’t believe cholesterol automatically needs to be “low.” In fact, some research suggests higher LDL over the long term - especially in women - may correlate with longevity. So no, I don’t die on the hill of “LDL must be low.”

✨ What matters more? The ratios.
And your family history.

If you have a history of heart disease, stroke, or cardiovascular issues, a basic lipid panel often leaves too many unanswered questions.

That’s where advanced testing comes in:
• Oxidized LDL
• Lipoprotein(a)
• Particle size & density (small vs large LDL)

Your body doesn’t label cholesterol as “good” or “bad.”
It depends on how it behaves, whether it becomes oxidized, and whether it contributes to inflammation inside the blood vessels.

📌 So, yes, lipid panels are valuable - but if you want a clearer picture of your true cardiovascular risk, especially with family history, going deeper matters. Knowledge = prevention!

Stay tuned! Up next: cortisol 👀

🩸 CBC: Don’t Skip the Differential!

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is one of the most commonly run labs - and yes, insurance usually covers it. But here’s the key: there are two ways to run it, and one gives us *far* more insight.

👉 CBC with differential breaks down the types and percentages of your white blood cells - not just the total count.

Why that matters ⬇️
▫️Helps assess immune system function
▫️Gives clues about infections, inflammation, allergies, parasites, yeast, and more
▫️Can explain symptoms like eczema, headaches, digestive issues, fatigue, and chronic inflammation
▫️Helps determine what your body may be fighting under the surface

Without the differential, we often only catch major red flags like severe anemia, infection, or leukemia - and miss the functional patterns that guide targeted support.

📌 Bottom line:
If you’re running a CBC, don’t skip the differential.
It gives your practitioner much better insight and helps guide the right next steps.

Stay tuned for tomorrow as we break down Lipids! 👀

Why I run a CMP (not just a BMP) 💉

A Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) gives a *much fuller picture* than a basic metabolic panel - and details matter.

We’re not just checking boxes. We’re looking at 👇
▫️Kidney function (BUN, creatinine, eGFR)
▫️Blood sugar regulation
▫️Electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, chloride)
▫️Protein status & inflammation
▫️Liver enzymes & metabolic health

"Normal” doesn’t always mean optimal - and trends, ratios, and ranges tell a story that often gets overlooked.

👉Don’t settle for the basic panel when comprehensive insight is available!

Stay tuned! Tomorrow we’ll break down the CBC 👀

🚨 This is what’s broken in healthcare.

Insurance is denying labs your *doctor* recommends, calling them “not medically necessary” - then asking patients to pay $700+, when those same tests can cost $80 cash without insurance 🤦

That’s backwards.

Insurance shouldn’t decide your care. Your practitioner should.
Because if you’re not testing, you’re guessing ❌

Labs I often recommend 👇
CMP
CBC w/ differential
Lipid Panel
(Lp(a), Apo B, Apo A, ox. LDL)
HbA1C
Insulin
HsCrp
Homocysteine
TSH
Free T4
Free T3
Total T4
Total T3
Reverse T3
TPO/Thyroglobulin antibodies
Cortisol
Progesterone
Estradiol
Testosterone (free and total)
Ferritin
Iron
B12/Folate
Vitamin D
ANA
Uric Acid

This week I’ll explain why these labs matter and how they help you move from surviving to thriving. Stay tuned!

A patient came in wearing this today, and it felt like the exact reminder we all needed ✨

Healing is not linear. It never has been… and it never will be.

Some days it feels like one step forward and two steps back. It’s frustrating, it’s exhausting, and yes - it can really suck sometimes. But that feeling is part of the process, not a sign you’re doing it wrong.

If you’re committed to doing the work to heal, you will never be as low as when you started. Even when it feels like it, you ARE making progress 🙌

Sending love to everyone walking this journey. Don’t give up! You are doing an amazing job 💞

Remember that you’re not alone in this. Drop a ❤️ if you’re on the healing path too.
