Raking leaves can improve your upper body strength and burn up to 240 calories an hour.
For maximum benefit, pay attention to your back (try not to twist your spine), and warm up a bit before grabbing a rake.

Slouching or crossing our legs are common habits many of us share.
Unfortunately, when we fold our bodies in this way, we also compress our hip flexors and reduce blood circulation. Remember to sit tall, uncross those legs and let your body function as it’s supposed to.
You might need occasional reminders to check in on yourself, but after a while your muscle memory will take over and perfect posture will be your preferred pose.

Strength training is a great way to shape your body. Did you know the benefits go well beyond your muscle tone?
One notable benefit is improved insulin sensitivity, which is independent of the benefits from any resulting weight loss.

When you move, your joints are constantly working to produce and circulate synovial fluid in the areas between the bones.
Excess synovial fluid is squeezed out mechanically to maintain a thin layer on the cartilage surface for lubrication, ensuring smooth movement and protecting the joints from excess damage due to friction.
Regular varied joint movement helps to increase blood flow to the area so that nutrients permeate throughout the tissues and cellular waste is efficiently flushed out.
Movement effectively refreshes your joints!

We need to pay attention to the warning signs before they escalate into something worse.

When you unexpectedly find yourself working remotely, it can be tempting to spend your workday lounging on your sofa or bed with a laptop. But it doesn't take long for these awkward positions to start to cause pain and even injury. It's important to keep good workspace ergonomics in mind, even at home:
Neutral Elbow
- When you sit at your desk with your shoulders relaxed, you should be able to type with your elbows at a ""neutral"" 90-degree angle. Some options for achieving this include installing a keyboard tray under your desk, raising your chair height, or working at a child-size desk.
Flat Feet
- Your feet should be flat on the floor with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle to protect your hips and lower back. If necessary, use a footstool.
Screen Height
- Elevate your computer's screen to a comfortable eye height to avoid needing to bend your neck for long periods of time. This can be achieved with a purpose-built stand, an inverted box or even a pile of books. If you use a laptop, adding an external keyboard will help.
Lumbar Support
- if your chair does not have lumbar support, a rolled-up towel placed against the small of your back should help you maintain the natural curve of your spine.
Standing Desk
- Try to spend part of your day at a standing desk to reduce the strain on your body and circulatory system from sitting. Good options for a standing desk include a kitchen counter or even an ironing board. When standing to type, your keyboard should be a little lower than your elbows.
What creative solutions have you come up with to maintain good ergonomics while working from home?

Revitalize Medical Center was founded in early 2019 by Dr. Sheetal DeCaria, a double-board certified physician in anesthesia and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. DeCaria attended college and medical school in Michigan, followed by residency and fellowship in Chicago. Since completing her fellowship, Dr DeCaria was on faculty at the University of Chicago for half a decade, where she taught dozens of physicians in training. During this time, she pursued further education in integrative medicine, including a year-long faculty scholars program at the Northwestern Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. She has authored numerous textbook chapters and peer-reviewed publications on pain management, presented at national conferences, and serves as an expert peer reviewer for a top-tier national pain medicine journal.
About Revitalize Medical Center
Dr. DeCaria recognized a need for integration of the complementary and conventional sides of medicine. And so, Revitalize Medical Center was born—a place patients in chronic pain can go to for an east meets west approach to reduce pain, restore function, and revitalize their life.
Our wellness approach focuses on minimizing medication use and targeting the root cause of your pain. A treatment algorithm will be designed specifically for you – using proven minimally invasive procedures and regenerative medicine. We partner with the patient to develop a treatment plan to heal both mind and body.
