WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?

Being a Postpartum Doula is my passion!! I am a mother of three grown boys and I know from experience how rewarding, challenging and sometimes overwhelming parenting can be. Some of the services I provide as a Postpartum Doula are:

*Assistance to the mother for the recovery of her body after the birth.
*Providing nutritious snacks and meals, including hydration for the new mama to help successful breastfeeding.
*Validation and enhancing of the mother's ability to nurture and care for new baby/babies.
*Assistance with breastfeeding and/or supplement feeding for the baby.
*Accompany the mother to her pediatric and/or obstetric visits.
*Running errands such as groceries, baby supplies and medications.
*Instruction, education, demonstration and assistance with newborn care to include feeding, burping, bathing, diapering, dressing, soothing, comforting, sleep safety issues, parent-child bonding, coping skills and relaxation skills.
*Watchful eye for medical problems that may require the attention of the pediatrician. (hydration of infants, keeping track of wet/stool diapers, monitoring of jaundice and clogged tear ducts.)
*Doing laundry, changing bed linens, light clean up of kitchen and dishes so mom can relax and spend time with her newborn.

Please call me for a consultation or a visit to help you and your family during this most precious time.

The need for postpartum support is crucial.

When first time parents come home from the hospital with their infant, they will be undertaking a task in which they may have little or no experience or preparation. Where are the experts who were so supportive during pregnancy? Where is the support team that had all the answers and the classes that taught them all they needed to know? All of a sudden the focus has shifted. The baby is now the center of attention, seen by the pediatrician at two weeks old. The new mother, who had been seen weekly, may not be seen by her obstetrician for six weeks. She is going through the most physically and emotionally challenging period of her life with very little guidance.

With proper postpartum support, guidance and information, new parents will have increased confidence in their new parenting role. Women can have greater breastfeeding satisfaction and success, increased duration of breastfeeding, better maternal-infant bonding, fewer incidences or severity of postpartum depression and less stress on the family. Every woman deserves a healthy pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery period.

Doulas are for Everyone! March 22-28 is World Doula Week! The theme for 2021 is .

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting the incredible Sara Striefel.

Sara wanted to volunteer her writing skills and broaden her portfolio and I couldn't wait to work with her. She is a creative writer that has an extensive background in healthcare, so I thought she would be a perfect fit for a guest post as we celebrate World Doula Week. I wanted to know her perspective on The Family Nest and doula care through her eyes. Enjoy her beautifully written piece on why doulas are for everyone, while also incorporating how doulas and care providers, together, make an incredible team for birthing parents. Let's hear from Sara on the blog ... https://www.familynestcolorado.com/world-doula-week-why-doulas-are-for-everyone/

THE BENEFITS OF A POSTPARTUM DOULA

Hiring a Postpartum Doula during this pandemic may relieve many stresses for new families. During this time when social distancing is required and social support gatherings have been cancelled due to COVID, new mamas are home alone. Having a baby is a glorious wonderful experience but can also be overwhelming without proper support.

Reaching out to a Postpartum Doula to answer questions, provide support and guidance can be very reassuring. Having a trusted person to turn to for continuous support has tremendous benefits. I can provide answers to questions about breastfeeding, latching issues, pumping questions and milk storage. I offer soothing techniques for calming baby and offer help as to why "my baby" is crying. I give advice and support with newborn care, bathing, umbilical cord care, cradle cap, baby acne, etc. New parents have all sorts of questions and a Postpartum Doula has the experience and knowledge to provide the answers.

A new mother may be experiencing many hormonal changes within her body. Right after giving birth, your estrogen and progesterone levels drop dramatically, which can attribute to mood swings or anxiety. Meanwhile, oxytocin, which is called the "bonding hormone" floods your system. New mothers may experience all sorts of these emotions and having a Postpartum Doula to share thoughts and feelings helps to alleviate stress and anxiety.

I offer many different levels of support after the birth of a baby. I am happy to do a telephone conference, a zoom call or simply come over for a consultation. I provide both day and night support.
My services include many things like picking up groceries, running errands and picking up medications. I love to cook and am happy to provide meals to make sure the parents are well nourished. During this time, having a Postpartum Doula to provide knowledge, guidance and support is very beneficial to the family.
