Since 2021, Gateway Recovery’s doors have been open to all women seeking to better their lives and to learn how to become productive members of society. We opened our first CSLR (cooperative sober living residence) in Gloucester City, NJ. Gloucester City is a town severely impacted by the opioid epidemic and very close to ground zero, Camden. It is also a very walkable town, close to public transportation, and is home to two recovery clubhouses. Gloucester City is a prime location for a sober living. Gloucester City NEEDS sober livings and much more. Gateway came to this town with the intention of helping it. We came to this town with love in our hearts and our hands extended to those in need.
Each time I tell the story of how we were received in this town, I am faced with overwhelming sadness and anger. I frequently wonder if I’m dreaming this crazy situation. From investigating me for running a brothel and putting the Gateway women under surveillance
to illegally searching the property and advising a resident who was asked to leave to break in to the Gateway house; we have been met with nothing but hostility and hate. I have been lambasted and threatened by police officers, zoning officers, and town clerks. The ironic part of this is that Gloucester City is picking a non-winnable fight with an entity licensed by the STATE OF NEW JERSEY and held in high regard by county officials and professionals in the field of addiction.
The damage has been done. Gloucester City has successfully forced me to seek medical care for the anxiety from this situation. Gloucester City has provoked such levels of fear and stress that my pregnancy was impacted. My daughter, born at 27 weeks gestation, arrived after my water broke at 22 weeks (following a particularly stressful incident with the town). Sexual discrimination, Fair Housing Act violations, Americans with Disabilities Act violations, police harassment, illegal search and trespass…all of this is nothing compared to what my daughter endured while spending the first hundred days of her life in the NICU. And it is certainly nothing compared to what my little warrior will face as a result of all this.
There is a major shortage of female sober livings in Camden County. I get at least 2 calls a day. My houses and our other CSLR friends are always full. As a result of this fight, Gateway has spent over $50,000 fighting Gloucester City. This money could have gone towards a down payment on a new sober house. Instead, I turn away women every single day. And when I do, I know that those women may not survive until a bed opens up. This is my truth. This is reality. THIS IS LIFE OR DEATH.
Our final stand before the Federal Court steps in is another zoning board hearing on 9/20 at 7:30PM. There is always time dedicated to public comment. As you can guess, it is not fun or kind. As we’ve asked in the past, we are humbly asking for anyone who is able to come out and support us. Your physical presence and/or comment is greatly appreciated.
The town picked a fight with the wrong woman. I operate Gateway with love and I preach hope. I know we will prevail and continue to help the “least” of our brothers and sisters suffering from the awful disease of addiction.
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
