Great news! Gloucester has been in need of more recovery coaches for a while now so the Gloucester Police Department (Official)'s Community Impact Unit's "Teach to Reach" program fills a huge gap in our community. Big shoutout to Tito for making this happen - we can't wait to see this up and running!

Chief Edward Conley and Mayor Greg V***a are pleased to report that the Gloucester Police Department Community Impact Unit has received $29,878 in grant funding for a new “Teach to Reach” Initiative that will provide training to recovery coaches.

Sometimes the harshest, most stigmatizing language you will encounter when struggling with addiction are from people who are supposed to be there to help you. Medical providers tend to be guilty of this - whether it be thinking there's only one way to recovery, judging you for toxicology results, or not connecting you to wraparound services. This article goes a bit more into depth about how exactly stigmatizing language in addiction treatment can be harmful.

Person-centered language and meeting individuals where they are at are two non-stigmatizing actions that treatment centers and providers can adopt to ensure they are providing the best care possible.

Ironically, the conversation that spurred a peer-support specialist at a buprenorphine program to yell me out of the room was ...

We are lucky enough to have many providers in our coalition that believe medications are a viable part of a person's recovery. We are even luckier that these providers help to educate other providers that medications for opioid use disorder should not be stigmatized. Thank you North Shore Community Health, Inc., Beth Israel Lahey Health Behavioral Services, and Middlesex Recovery, P.C. for promoting medication as an honorable path in recovery.

Medication can be a part of your recovery journey. For more information on where to access buprenorphine in Gloucester, visit our website at https://gloucesteraddictionresources.weebly.com/medication-for-opioid-use-disorder.html

Buprenorphine is a medication that eases a persons’ withdrawal symptoms and cravings from opioids, which may allow them to focus on strengthening connection with friends and family, searching for and maintaining a job, and more. It is an opioid receptor partial agonist that attaches to, and partially activates, opioid receptors in the brain. There are several medications for opioid overdose, withdrawal, and addiction that are safe, effective, and can save lives. https://loom.ly/wG57xCo

134 reversed overdoses in 2 months at the Overdose Prevention Center in NYC. The individuals whose lives have been saved now have the chance to enter treatment, receive care for comorbidities like HIV/Hepatitis C, start recovery, rebuild relationships with loved ones and share harm reduction practices with others.

It's been two months since New York City opened the country's first overdose prevention center, and public health experts said the clinic is already saving lives.

"To eliminate the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, we need to see these disorders for what they are: chronic, treatable medical conditions. People with substance use disorders deserve compassion and respect—not blame for their illness."
