This Disability Pride Month, we celebrate the incredible journey of David LaGrange from Flame. Despite being blind, David has an extraordinary talent for drumming and singing that lights up every stage he steps on. He was a key play in the formation of Flame in 2003, named in honor of the Special Olympics torch symbolizing hope and inspiration. As a devoted Catholic, he not only shared his music but also his faith at the 19th International Festival of Different Abilities in Italy, making memories that will last a lifetime. Most recently, Dave joined the band in Cambodia as guests of the US Embassy. Let's embrace determination and the power of dreams together.
Disability Pride Month is a time to recognize the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities. It affirms that disability is a natural and valuable part of human diversity—not a deficit or condition to be fixed.

More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States—over 70 million people—have a disability. This month calls on everyone to promote inclusion and ensure people with disabilities are accepted exactly as they are, without conditions.

🎶 FLAME IGNITES THE STAGE IN CELEBRATION OF ADA35🎶

FLAME The Band, The Arc Lexington's world-renowned band, delivered an unforgettable performance in San Antonio, Texas, as part of the celebration for the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, hosted by San Antonio Independent Living Services. ✨

It’s been 15 years since FLAME last performed in San Antonio, and their return was met with open arms. Joined by passionate disability advocates, the band helped commemorate the progress made over the decades and used the power of music to remind everyone why every voice deserves to be heard.

We’re incredibly proud of this talented group for continuing to inspire audiences across the country. Thank you, San Antonio — we’re still feeling the love! ❤️🔥

🎉 Celebrating Barbara Treadwell – Invest in Others Award Finalist! 🎉

We’re thrilled to share that Barbara Treadwell, a longtime Advisory Board member for Transitions, former board member of The Lexington Foundation and tireless advocate for people with disabilities, has been named a finalist for the Invest in Others Lifetime Achievement Award! 🏆

Barbara’s journey with The Arc Lexington began decades ago when we first started supporting her son. Since then, she has become one of our greatest champions — helping to shape the future of our agency and change the lives of countless families.

Her leadership was instrumental in the creation of Transitions, our nationally recognized program for neurodiverse young adults. She helped raise millions for The Arc Lexington Foundation, secured a $1 million no-interest loan to launch Transitions, and initiated a first-of-its-kind partnership with SCAD to expand creative opportunities for our students.

Barbara’s impact is personal, visionary, and lasting. We are proud and grateful to stand beside her as she receives this incredible honor.

🎉 Celebrating 35 Years of the ADA! 🎉

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark piece of legislation that broke down barriers and opened doors for people with disabilities across the country.

At The Arc Lexington, we are proud to honor this historic milestone and celebrate with advocates and allies from across New York State at the NYS Plaza in Albany. Our very own band, FLAME The Band performed live, filling the plaza with music, pride, and the powerful spirit of disability rights.

The ADA helped make it possible for the people we support to access their communities, advocate for their rights, and live more independently. It continues to inspire our mission every day—to empower people with disabilities to achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives.

The fight for equality is far from over, but today, we celebrate how far we've come and recommit to building a more inclusive world for all.

This Disability Pride Month, we are proud to celebrate individuals like Alyssa, whose determination and advocacy shine brightly.

Alyssa is a passionate, driven member of our Lexington community who spends her time giving back in meaningful ways. She volunteers with impactful programs such as The Joshua Project, which provides free lunches to children in Schoharie County, and the City Mission of Schenectady, where she supports individuals experiencing homelessness and hardship.

In addition to her community service, Alyssa is a strong self-advocate and a dedicated voice for others. This past year, she participated in the New York State Advocacy Institute, where she strengthened her skills to help drive real change. Alyssa is a proud business owner too—running her own creative venture, American Made Crafts, which reflects her independence, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Her story reflects what Disability Pride Month is all about: celebrating the power, resilience, and value of people with disabilities. Alyssa shows us that when people are empowered, they thrive—and they uplift everyone around them.

Disability Pride Month, observed every July, commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 and promotes visibility, culture, and community. It reminds us that disability is not something to overcome—it’s a vital part of the human experience.

Join us in honoring Alyssa and all those who show us the true meaning of pride, inclusion, and strength.

🎓 We were honored to welcome Barbara Treadwell, a member of the Transitions Advisory Board, who traveled from Savannah, Georgia to visit our Mayfield campus this week!

Barbara had the opportunity to hear directly from students as they presented their college presentations and personal growth stories. She enjoyed a behind-the-scenes moment with FLAME, our internationally acclaimed rock band, and was touched to receive a handmade scarf—created by students in our Transitions enrichment program.

Her thoughtful visit reminded us how meaningful it is to have leaders who truly listen, encourage, and believe in the potential of every student.
Thank you, Barbara, for your commitment to empowerment!

🎉 We’re heading to Albany this Wednesday to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)!

FLAME, The Arc Lexington’s internationally acclaimed band, will be performing at New York State’s official celebration hosted by OPWDD—and we couldn’t be more proud.

The ADA opened doors, protected rights, and made space for the dreams of millions of people with disabilities. At The Arc Lexington, we live this mission every day—supporting people to live full, inclusive lives in their communities.

FLAME embodies that spirit. As a band of talented musicians—all with disabilities—they’ve performed on stages around the world, from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia. Named a People Magazine Hero, featured on Good Morning America, and honored in the National Disability Rights Museum’s Historic Register, FLAME is proof of what’s possible when barriers are removed and talent is recognized.

🎶 We can’t wait to be part of this moment. Join us in celebrating 35 years of progress—and all the work still ahead. https://opwdd.ny.gov/event/new-york-states-celebration-35th-anniversary-americans-disabilities-act
