Signal Timing Changes Coming to US-54 & 199th Street Intersection to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow

GODDARD, KS – In response to long-standing community concerns and growing traffic challenges at the intersection of US-54 (Kellogg) and 199th Street, the City of Goddard is implementing an updated signalization plan aimed at improving safety and reducing vehicle conflicts.

On Tuesday, August 12th, a technician from Gades Sales Co., Inc. will be onsite around 10:30 AM to modify the signal phasing at the intersection. During installation, the lights will enter a temporary flashing mode for approximately 15 minutes.

The key change involves altering the North/South (199th Street) phasing, so that only one direction of travel is allowed through the intersection at a time. This modification was developed collaboratively by City staff and Gades representatives as a strategy to reduce collisions and improve vehicle flow—especially during peak traffic periods.

In addition to improvements at 199th & Kellogg, the City has requested a longer green light cycle for North/South traffic at the 183rd & Kellogg intersection to better accommodate travel demand in that corridor.

These signal changes are just one piece of a broader effort to address traffic safety in Goddard. The City recently secured approval for a Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) Study through the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). This study, now underway, focuses specifically on the US-54/199th intersection and surrounding frontage road network. It will analyze crash history, turning movements, and potential geometric or access improvements, ultimately helping the City pursue additional funding for long-term infrastructure upgrades.

The City of Goddard remains committed to working with partners, residents, and state agencies to enhance traffic safety and ensure efficient, reliable travel throughout the community.
