With his dog Rudy at his side my oldest son Landen waited patiently for his birthday fish. And what dog isn’t complete without his fish goggles??? He didn’t have to wait too long before the rod went down and boated his first king of the season! Not a big one but a king just the same. After trolling a couple more hours he was able to land a “Full Size One”. Tipping the scales at Larry’s at just over 28 lbs. Not quite a Tyee but a quality fish for sure. Season is heating up and fishing should get increasingly more consistent. If you are interested in trying your luck, book one of the many professional guides our area has to offer. See you on the water!

Summer is almost here, and that means SALMON SEASON!! I have prime dates available in August and September and don’t forget the awesome Coho run that shows up in October. I have a two person minimum. I DON’T mix parties so the folks you fish with will not be a complete stranger. I am looking forward to seeing my returning clients along with meeting some new folks as well. So come on and spend a day or two with me on the Rogue River as we try our luck at catching some beautiful fish and make some great memories!

Spring has sprung on the banks of the Rogue River! Wildlife is abundant as the geese are now out foraging with their newly hatched goslings. Otters are frolicking up and down the bank’s sliding down them like its newly fallen snow. And of course let us not forget about the Bald eagles that glide effortlessly across the sky reminding us of what a great land we live in.
Then of course the salmon that migrate up this waterway to their final destination well over a 100 miles from the icy pacific. Chris and his grandpa Bill were fortunate enough to witness all of this and were able to take home some wonderful fresh chinook! I was fortunate to make some new friends and watch Chris battle this chromer all the way to the net where the guide tried his best to botch the whole deal!😬
As the day came to an end, we all realized how fortunate we were to have such a great day! Salmon are few and far between right now but as you wait for the opportunity to catch one of these sliver slabbed studs, look around and you will be amazed what else you may see! We truly live in a beautiful place.
Thank you Bill and Chris for sharing your day with me! As for Monica, your day is coming….

Lots to say about the three generations in this picture. Let’s start off with Clyde, the younger fella with the chiseled features on the far right. Thank you for your words of wisdom and most of all thank you for your service to our country 🇺🇸
Second let me talk to you about Chris. He phoned me several days ago wanting to fly up from the LA area so his daughter can catch a King Salmon in celebration of her 10th birthday. This is what his daughter, Sadie wanted to do. I was brutally honest and told him that fishing has dropped to almost an all time low like the stock market did when the tariffs went into effect. Well, he had faith in me in spite of the fishing economy. We had to get that “Birthday Fish”! He got up at 4 am, he and Sadie flew to Medford and picked up Grandpa Clyde. The pressure on me was insurmountable to produce a fish for someone who flew so far to catch something that has been elusive as Bigfoot. I reached out to my guide buddies and they all told me that if there was only one fish to be caught on the river, it would be the 10 year old girl from SOCAL that wished this for her birthday. Well, apparently they were correct!! I fished in a spot I’ve never anchored before in anticipation that Sadie would punch her tag on a Spring King! Zzzzzzzzingggg screamed the reel and the chaos began. 3:45 in the afternoon, when the sun was high in gin clear water the Majic had begun to materialize. Was it Devine intervention?? Sure felt like it to me, everything went silent as we dropped out with that chrome and purple foe. Smiles and excitement was on the forefront as that salmon had a different plan. He made several runs and broke water many times to attempt to shake the wickedly sharp hook buried deep within his gums. As it would play out, it was “Simply Meant to Be”! Sadie got her birthday Salmon and I was fortunate enough to watch three generations bask in the glory of the wonderful bounty that was put to rest on a bed of ice. That ol’ Salmon got a one way ticket back to Los Angeles! I got the privilege of getting a young girl a birthday salmon! We were all fortunate today but I feel the most fortunate watching three generations enjoy the beautiful Rogue River! Special thanks to Travis Bowman for introducing me to these wonderful clients 👊

Sometimes when you have a day off from the Rogue River, you sit on the banks and listen to some wisdom. Mark Van Hook has been carving out his living by perfecting his craft one fish and one client at a time. Making the best out of every day he’s been given after guiding his clients the last 44 years. I was fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with him and my father on the the porch of Lex’s Landing. He shared with me many stories, some of hardship and some of victories. Not all of them involved a salmon or a steelhead but all of them involved people. Although we guide to put our clients on fish, a true guide is a fisher of mankind. He never spoke of the largest fish he ever caught or the one that got away. He spoke of the people that shared their time with him, whether pulling hard against the downstream current of the Elk River in his drift boat or battling the pour off after the tide turns on the Rogue. His conversation was all about his clients and not about what a fish slaying machine that he is. I got to bask in the glory of his knowledge and stories today. As a guide, you will never be a millionaire, you will always have disappointment but you MUST celebrate success! You will have to define your own success, but my success came in the form of a cold beer with my dad and time with a fella that makes his living making one friend at a time. With that being said, today I won the lottery…… Thanks Mark and Dad for hanging out with me today!! A special thanks to Shane Blair who promised to give me his top producing salmon spinner!👊

Rudy my yellow lab was lying in the back yard and he said “Let’s go Fishing!” So we loaded up the boat with a few snacks and the necessary sacrificial anchovies. We then went up river in search of our own piece of water! Not long into our afternoon adventure my beautiful wife Amy had a dandy salmon testing her angling tenaciousness. As the salmon would peel line off her tekota 500, her face would grimace as she would return the favor. After about the sixth run, that ol’ salmon knew his final destination was going to be the Rec Tech bbq! With gentle scoop of the net and the WHACK of the equalizer that fish was on ice!! Rudy and Cutter had so much fun watching their mom battle that salmon so they just kept staring at that inside rod. Zzzzzzzzingggg the rod was playing that oh so familiar tune that all fishermen love to hear! Amy was on again and this time was no different than the last. That poor ol’ salmon had to surrender itself to ceremonial box full of ice. Great day it was on our beautiful river! Amy and the dogs are looking forward to heading out again someday to test their angling skills. As for me I’m hoping she remembers to “Always tip your Guide”!!😜

Devin Hunter of Medford just checked one off his bucket list! Never has he caught salmon on the Rogue River. He phoned me the other day and said he wanted catch a salmon. He showed up with a positive attitude and by golly within an hour he punched his ticket!!!! Quite a fire drill getting it into the net. If it wasn’t for my deckhand Nolan we would have lost it for sure! Fishing is tough out here today but you can’t catch one from your recliner. Great job Devin! And thanks Nolan for bringing your “A” game.
