What is a doula? There isn't an easy definition because what a doula does varies just as much as the birthing people she or he works with. Doulas are there to hold our hands, to reassure us with their words. They can suggest new positions or alleviate pain through counter-pressure and hip sque

For me, the first time I ever felt like a "bad mother" was when I was having trouble nursing my first newborn. Logically, a woman having trouble breast-feeding certainly doesn't make her a bad mother, but that's how I felt at the time. Today I was able to help a mother of a new little baby by simply visiting her house for 15 minutes and offering a suggestion. That is why I'm so passionate about breast-feeding education. The precious first few weeks of your babies life go by so quickly, you shouldn't spend them stressed and worried.

Our page shares resources, support and information about breastfeeding. One reason I am passionate about the topic is because I was not given accurate information with my first born and I still see that many people withhold information due to fear of "hurting feelings" or "making someone feel guilty" UGH, we deserve information so we can make informed decisions. Facts are not attacks. If I had known what I know now, I would have sought out an IBCLC or support person for advice. Even if I needed to supplement, I would have known how much and when...we can support everyone's decision while still offering the scientific evidence. I know supplementation is often necessary--but that does not erase the studies and facts about human milk. It is okay to share best practices. It is all right to tell people about car seat safety, sleep recommendation, nutrition, etc...it is NOT okay to withhold information. You may feel like it is helping others, but it actually shows little respect for others ability to evaluate information and be autonomous. Why are people trying to minimize breastfeeding? Doesn't it make sense that each mammal has species-specific milk? Let's give moms more access to donor milk, lactation consultants, free clinics, etc. Breast and it is okay to say so...facebook.com/birthingandbreastfeeding
