“What is your story?” Renowned Hmong author Kao Kalia Yang reminds us that this question is too rarely asked of refugee children. Their stories don’t begin with conflict; they begin with the same wonder as any childhood. It is war and displacement—and the world’s failure to listen—that redefine them.

We were honored to host Kao Kalia Yang at the Tobin Thompson Pediatric Lectureship, where she emphasized the importance of youth voice among refugee children. Her own selective mutism (voluntarily refusing to speak English as a child) honed her skills in observation and deep listening, making her the powerful storyteller she is today.

Imagine spending hours — or even days — in wet, dirty socks. For many of our unhoused neighbors, that’s daily life. And with colder weather approaching, it’s not just uncomfortable — it’s dangerous. That’s why the amazing team at Packet Power stepped up in a big way, donating 550 cold-weather relief kits for our Community Paramedics and EMTs to distribute to those in need. Each kit is a pair of toe warmers, a pair of hand warmers, a lip balm, a first aid kit, and a pair of warm socks. These kits aren't just warm, dry socks — they can spark conversations, build trust, and even help prevent serious health issues like sores, frostbite, and infections.

We’ve seen the ravages of gun violence in Minneapolis recently, from Annunciation, to a shooting at the University of Minnesota and more. A hospital-based program, Next Steps, aims to help those victims with recovering from these traumatic events.
