Extensive scientific research demonstrates that when challenges with focus, behavior, academics or socialization are present they are often related to areas of immature connectivity in the brain. Research also shows that the brain is malleable (also called brain plasticity!). There are many exercises and activities that when practiced regularly, can help impact brain connectivity.

Scroll above for exercises from the Brain Balance team that you can do at home with your child to help promote better brain health and connections. Read our full blog on exercises to promote brain connectivity here: https://bit.ly/3MDfTYL

Sensory Processing Disorders and sensitivities to heat often go hand-in-hand due to an inability to regulate temperature.
During the hot summer months, kids with SPD may overheat more quickly or take longer to start sweating. When kids overheat, their physical discomfort translates almost immediately into emotional distress. To avoid dealing with a sensory meltdown, take these proactive steps!

Watch for Signs of Overheating:

Flushed cheeks
Rapid breathing
Headache
Nausea and/or vomiting
Dizziness
Fever
Trouble regulating emotions

Tips to Help:
Wear natural, breathable fabrics
Stay hydrated: monitor hydration even if your child says they're not thirsty.
Limit time spent in direct sunlight: set a timer and take regular shade breaks.

“So since we’ve started Brain Balance, we’ve seen such better focus, he actually loves the word focus, he is much more focused at school, at sports, at home. His confidence has gone through the roof, we are still in the program but I notice something different about Wes if not every day, definitely every week. He is just growing leaps and bounds and he is coming up to par with kids his own age that he should have been with when he was behind, so we are very happy with Brain Balance.”

We truly appreciate the stories from our Brain Balance parents, thank you for sharing your child’s breakthrough! ❤️

"I have an analogy to talk about, like you said, that misalignment and development and how that relates to our parenting. So I'd like everybody to think about a football quarterback for a minute.

So running an offense, calling a play, everybody lines up and they have a role that in a place they're supposed to go, a route they're supposed to run, something they're supposed to do. So in a passing play, the quarterback's supposed to throw to a predetermined spot downfield according to the route that his receiver or receivers are supposed to run, he actually throws to the mark where the receiver's supposed to be. . .

Well, parenting, we have a similar task. We are expected to parent toward a target of where our child is supposed to be, and we use age as the indicator of where that spot is downfield. For example, I may think because I do, that my 13-year-old son should be able to set his alarm before he goes to bed at night and wake himself up to that alarm for school every day and then begin to get ready for the day. And I think that because his older sibling was able to do it at his age, or maybe I think 13-year-olds are supposed to do that, or I was able to do that when I was his age. So we kind of take that expectation template and lay it down on top of our children.

Unfortunately, that's not how development works.”

“The truth is that some of our kids are not functioning at their actual age level because chronological age is rarely an indicator of where a child is functionally . . .

And asynchronous development is just simply where a child's actual age and their developmental levels in all categories aren't aligned. They can be aligned in some, but maybe they're misaligned in some other areas, creating that asynchrony or misalignment . . .

Unfortunately, that's not how development works. It doesn't always track in that kind of seamless, well-timed chronological schedule for every child, but we think it does. So we run the play over and over and over, set your alarm, get up in the morning, start getting ready for school, and we think that finally he's going to be in the right spot downfield one day and he's going to remember to do it, not hit snooze until it doesn't go off, and then he's late for school or he waits for me to wake him up. But nothing changes.”

Looking for a sweet treat to cool off this summer that’s also brain boosting? Luckily, we have a few recipes all of which provide optimal fuel for the brain and help kids avoid sugar crashes:

Banana Nice-Cream
1 banana, peeled, chunked and frozen
Mix ins - peanut butter, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, cinnamon, etc…

Puree frozen banana chunks in a food processor or powerful blender until smooth and creamy. Add optional mix ins and puree to combine. Enjoy immediately.

Honeydew Sorbet
4½ cups fresh honeydew (approx. 1 honeydew), cubed
1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
¼ cup honey
¼ cup water

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the cubed honeydew onto the baking sheet, leaving space in between the cubes to allow for even freezing.
Place the tray into the freezer and freeze the honeydew overnight, or until completely frozen (4-6 hours).
Place the frozen honeydew into the bowl of a food processor, along with the lemon juice, honey, and water, and pulse until the honeydew becomes crumbly. You may need to add more water until the mixture becomes more fluid, but not slushy. You're looking for a soft sorbet texture at this point.
Taste and add any additional honey mixture as needed at this time.
Serve immediately, or store in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Make these tasty treats a part of your diet this summer, and share the recipes with a friend!

We don’t know who needs to hear this today…

Parents, your child isn't purposefully giving you a hard time, their brain is having a hard time processing information. What we see on the surface as defiant behavior or anxiety is a sign their brain is having a difficult time processing the world around them. To read more to understand what’s happening in the brain when your child shows defiant behavior, go to brainbalance.com.
