UPDATE: THE PRESIDENT SIGNED THE ORDER THIS AFTERNOON.

WILL MA*****NA BE RECLASSIFIED … AND WHAT WOULD THAT MEAN?
There is talk the President will sign an executive order to reschedule ma*****na to a lower drug classification.
This would reclassify ma*****na from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Schedule I applies to substances with "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse" — the agency's most stringent classification, which is also for he**in, L*D and ecstasy in addition to ma*****na.
I’m sorry, anyone who thinks ma*****na is as dangerous as he**in or other opioids is just plum wrong.
The DEA uses Schedule III for substances "with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence."
Other Schedule III drugs include Tylenol with codeine, testosterone, anabolic steroids and ketamine.
Now moving pot to a lower schedule would not change the fact that it remains illegal for recreational use at the federal level.
But it could open the door to more research into ma*****na and expanded medical uses.
It might also lower the tax burden for state-licensed ma*****na dispensaries in the dozens of states that have legalized the drug, since federal law bars businesses that sell Schedule I substances from taking some tax deductions.
I do wonder if the reclassification might sway some lawmakers in Tennessee to consider legalizing medical or recreational cannabis?
To date, such bills fail time and again … though I believe if the issue was put to a public vote it would overwhelmingly pass.
We’ll see.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
