A proud moment for Pequea Valley Fire Department!

Our team recently assisted Lancaster EMS with the successful administration of prehospital whole blood — a first for Lancaster EMS.

During a medical emergency involving significant blood loss, our crews worked closely with Lancaster EMS to provide critical care in the field. Thanks to seamless teamwork and communication, the patient was safely transported to the hospital emergency department.

Shout out to our crew for having the early recognition of benefits that this new service could provide and requested the resource right away!

This milestone marks an exciting advancement in prehospital care within our region. We’re honored to support our partners at Lancaster EMS and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health in bringing this lifesaving capability to our community — because when every second counts, collaboration saves lives.

We’re proud to share that Lancaster EMS has successfully completed its first prehospital whole blood administration! Our team provided critical care to a patient experiencing a medical event with significant blood loss. With guidance from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Medical Command, Dr. Brent, and assistance from Pequea Valley Ambulance, the administration went smoothly, and the patient was safely delivered to the Hospital emergency department. Carrying whole blood in partnership with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is a big step forward in the prehospital care provided to our community when every second counts.

📞 717-664-1180 (Police)

07/08/2025

Today, we had the privilege of facilitating a show-and-tell presentation from the Penn Medicine Prehospital Physician Response Team, "Penn Med 1", for the Paradise Township Supervisors at their monthly workshop meeting.

This innovative program brings highly trained physicians directly to the scene of critical medical emergencies, supporting EMS crews with advanced procedures and life-saving interventions in the field. The best part, this service is offered FREE through a fellowship program with Penn Medicine. Currently, Penn Med 1 is the only Prehospital Physician Response Team offered in Lancaster County.

Supervisors had a chance to get an up-close look at the specialized response vehicle, equipment, and learn about the vital role these physicians play in prehospital care across our region.

Penn Med 1 and their crew of physicians have proven to be a huge asset to PVFD and the local community here in the Pequea Valley area. Penn Med 1 has already responded to multiple calls to assist our EMS crews, offered education/training opportunities, and help develop and foster better relationships with the department and hospital staff.

A huge thank you to Dr Mulcahy, Dr McCardell, and EMS Manager Andrew Rennie for coming out for this presentation and to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health for their commitment to advancing emergency medical services. Also, thank you to our township leaders for their continued support with PVFD and for taking the time to engage with this life-saving initiative!
