Six hundred and forty solar panels are now generating clean energy atop Beacon Health & Fitness Granger as part of our environmental commitment. You won't see them from the parking lot or through the windows during your workout, but this rooftop project represents a significant step in Beacon's sustainability efforts.

The environmental impact is significant:
- Prevents 320 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
- Equivalent to taking 70 cars off the road for a year.
- Generates enough electricity to power 44 average American households for a year.

"Despite its size, Beacon Health & Fitness Granger consumes a tremendous amount of energy, so reducing its carbon footprint through solar power is exciting," said Shane Galloway, Beacon's executive director of planning, projects and real estate. "At Beacon, this is just the beginning. There is still so much to do."

Nick Hintz, chief of skills and proficiencies at the Elkhart Fire Department, climbed 128 flights of stairs early this morning at Beacon Health & Fitness Granger.

This marks the 11th year the club member has completed this memorial climb in full firefighter gear to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 at the World Trade Center.

"The first 20 minutes were good, the last four were tough," Nick said following his ascent. "I can imagine with another 100 pounds of gear on me, and tools, what they were thinking when they were climbing."

He noted that in the Twin Towers' tight stairwells, firefighters would have faced the challenge of making room for civilians to come down as they were headed up. But they headed up with optimism.

"They thought they were going to put that fire out," Nick said solemnly. "Today is about remembrance. It also lets the community know what firemen are willing to do: We run in when everyone else runs away."

His poignant climb serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and selflessness exhibited by first responders on that fateful day. Watch more and hear an interview with Nick: https://bit.ly/4peX8zj

Derek Klute stepped up to receive serve during a pickleball game when his Achilles suddenly ruptured, leaving him on the ground in pain. His story reflects a growing trend as millions of adults are hitting the courts and doctor's offices.

Most pickleball ER visits involve players over 50, many of whom are "weekend warriors" jumping into intense games without a lot of other activity. Its quick starts, stops and directional changes put stress on tendons and ligaments.

"The biggest thing is, when I was playing tennis, I was 22-years-old. When I was playing pickleball, I was 60," Derek explains. "I was walking with my dog a lot, getting steps in, but that's not even close to what was going on here."

Dr. Mitchell Daugherty, sports medicine specialist at Beacon Bone & Joint Specialists, helped Derek heal without surgery. If you play pickleball, don't miss safety tips from Beacon experts in WSBT Eye on Health: https://bit.ly/4pdnrWB

Grace Schultz was three months pregnant when a motorcycle accident changed everything. An SUV unexpectedly pulled out in front of her. She swerved, but couldn't avoid impact.

Her injuries were devastating: crushed left foot, shattered pelvis, broken arm. She required a below-knee amputation. But through five surgeries and extensive inpatient rehabilitation at Memorial Hospital, the Beacon Bone & Joint Specialists team never gave up on helping her rebuild her life.

Grace's recovery was remarkable. Within six months, she took her first steps with a prosthetic leg. Then she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Today, she's back to work, raising three kids, and yes, she's still riding motorcycles.

"No matter how dark you might feel once in a while, things will get better. I still ride motorcycles. I have three kids. It only stops you if you let it." Read Grace's inspiring journey: https://bit.ly/4m9hqHA
