On Sunday, April 11, first due units, FDNY Engine 69 and Ladder 28 responded to a fire on the 17th floor at 2978 8th Avenue in Manhattan. While Captain Borthwick and Firefighters Kober, Reilly, Mealey, and Wren, Engine 69, prepared a standpipe stretch, Lieutenant Perrone and Firefighters, Pucci, Flores, Wheeler, Carroll, and Porteus, Ladder 28, made their way to the 17th floor where they were met with a moderate smoke condition. Members were able to see dark smoke pushing from under the door of the fire apartment. The inside team forced the apartment door where they were met with high heat and flames. Lieutenant Perrone was able to identify the fire behind the door and directed his team accordingly. The members began their search and found an individual in the back bedroom. They were able to secure the person near a window for air and sheltered in place while Engine 69 made a push with a hand line. Firefighter Wheeler entered the adjoining bedroom where he found another individual. Firefighter Wheeler provided his face piece to the person for air while sheltering in place. Once Engine 69 was able to extinguish the fire, Ladder 28 members were able to remove both individuals and transferred them to EMTs Yahav Brintouch and Neoraldein Milad, Station 13, who provided immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital.

It is 100% true that if we are doing things right, position and authority are the reward for performance and action.  However, I think most of us have seen or experienced moments in our careers that tell us the opposite can also be true.  How many times have we seen the color of a lid, arrangement of collar brass, authority of a position, or name on a patch change how someone was treated in training?  How many times have we blindly assigned value to someone based on these same factors?  How many of us have sought one or more of these things in hopes of increasing our stock?..

I try not to talk about myself much here, but I’ll  just go ahead and be honest and say I have chased all of those things throughout my career thinking they would earn me some kind of respect or esteem.  In reality, my pursuit of titles and positions did nothing more than distract me from the most important qualities any of us can possess; performance and action.  Seeking admiration through position leads to nothing more than egos, bad choices, broken promises, and ultimately being used by others seeking to do the same.  Sadly, many well-intentioned people find themselves lost because they allow their motivation to become tied to WHAT they want to be instead of WHO they want to be.

What we do will always be more important than where we do it from.  An orange front is no more an indication of someone’s knowledge, ability, or experience than a white lid.  It doesn’t take decades of time or the most bugles to make an impact.  Some of the most influential people on the rig became that way because they didn’t wait on a bunch of formalities to do so.  Sometimes position and authority are earned through performance and action, and sometimes they aren’t.  Regardless of where you are or where you want to be, how we do the job is always the most important thing!

There are certain liberties we are allowed to take in the field. There is also a process of approval for some emergent actions taken outside of department policies

After more than 20 minutes of waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Major Corey Britt, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department, drove the baby girl to the hospital in the fire truck.

Well done Bantam Fire Company

We wanted to share some kind words that were sent to us after a recent EMS Incident:

“Just wanted to send you a note on how well your rescue service was this past Monday evening. I fainted in our basement and when my wife called 911, they were at our house within minutes. The men had to carry me up from the basement to the ambulance. They were very courteous, kind and extremely professional. It's good to know that such people are in our small town to provide such excellent service. Please let them know how appreciative I am for their service.”

We appreciate thank you notes like this. Our members pride themselves in our service to the community.

***Update***
We thought you’d all like to know, our mother and daughter from the July 16th post made it to their destination. She sent a Thank You card to Deputy Ballard. Please read!

Dear Deputy Ballard,
It’s me 😊 This time I’m sending you $ to help inspire either other deputies or to help you with the people you encounter. Can you please take this $ and do as much good as you can? Please do not mention my name. I put various denominations in here; you know my sense of humor is dry. Maybe there is someone you don’t like… just give them $1 or $2 for a donut or water. You will find even gifting someone $2 or $5 will not only brighten their day but make you smile for years to come. So while none of the cash is for you this time you’ll find the gift is! Your heart will be happy and your face might hurt from smiling so much. You’ll always have a friend in ###xx. 😊 Thank you for making the world a better place one person at a time.
Signed, ###X

Original post ***DEPUTY BALLARD CAUGHT IN THE ACT***

Last night, Deputy Ballard crossed paths with a struggling family who missed their bus ride. The family was going to spend the night on the streets in hopes to catch a morning bus. Deputy Ballard dug into his own pockets and rented a room for the family, so they didn’t have to rough the streets. Thank you for your compassion and generosity Deputy Ballard! The world needs more of this!
