Losing someone we love is never easy. Grief isn't linear-it's a rollercoaster with lots of twists and turns. Here are five ways to help yourself through the healing process:

Making Peace with All Our Feelings:
When someone we love passes, we can be flooded with a variety of different emotions. Most people tend to feel sad or depressed, but others feel a mix of anger, abandonment, resentment, and a host of other feelings that can disrupt their daily functioning. A lot of people feel guilt for these mixed signals and try to compensate for them by hiding their true feelings. This can lead to problems, including prolonged grief. It is in our best interest to acknowledge that grief is never easy or linear. It is a rollercoaster with lots of twists and turns. We are not monsters for feeling anger or abandonment about the deceased. Accepting how we feel makes healing easier and allows for more expression, a factor we will need now more than ever to ensure proper healing.

Find Healthy Ways to Express Yourself:
After the loss of a loved one, it can be hard to find ways to express what exactly is going on in our head. That is why it is important to find ways to express ourselves that are healthy and (hopefully) healing. One thing to avoid is the use of substances and other addictive hobbies. These can be recreational activities like ma*****na or other drug use, risky s*x practices, self-harm, overeating, etc. The definition of a maladaptive coping skill is a coping mechanism that ends up harming ourselves or others. Sticking with existing hobbies or taking up new ones (such as art or writing) can be beneficial to healthy self-expression.

Be Patient with Yourself:
One element of grief that people struggle with is the lack of patience for themselves and others. Grief distorts thought processes and can make us feel both overstimulated by certain stimuli but also under-stimulated by others. We can feel like we’re trapped, that it’s taking too long for us to get over what happened. We start to wonder what is wrong with us and if we will ever recover. The expression that time heals all wounds can seem like a broad overstatement, but there is some truth to it. Time may not get rid of the pain entirely, but it does help us make room for it and adapt to our current circumstances. Remember that there is no timeline for grief and that healing happens at a different pace for everyone. The more we try to rush the process, the longer it can take to reach true acceptance.

Practice Self-Care:
Self-Care is a concept that is not new in today’s society but is often overlooked. It involves doing activities for ourselves that help rejuvenate us. Getting back in touch with ourselves on a fundamental level, a way to be content with life. It can be big and grand gestures, such as a lavish vacation to the Galapagos islands. Or it can be something simple, like taking an hour nap if our schedule permits or buying ourselves a cheap candy bar if it looks good. Self-Care is about knowing what we as people need. What speaks to us and gets us excited for It has always been here to an extent, but it got really bad last year. Outbursts became constant and failures lead to explosions. the next day. It’s easy to get bogged down in what we feel we have to do. It can drain and dehumanize us. In grief, it is important to remember that we are human and can enjoy the little pick me ups in life without feeling guilty.

Identify Your Supports:
This one may look like a no-brainer, but it is surprisingly common in therapy for people to realize that they have very few people they can actually rely on. Being able to identify solid supports makes it easier to reach out to people if needed. Giving the list some thought also helps us think about why they are good supporters and what exactly they do that comforts us. No two people are alike and we might approach two different people for entirely different reasons. One person may be fun to be around and help take our mind off our pain. Another person might be someone we can talk to about issues. This list also serves a basic function: to help us realize that we are not as alone as we feel. Depression and grief can wreak havoc on the mind and body, isolating us and distorting our thinking. They function best when we are alone and vulnerable. Having people there helps us cope and provides us with a sense of community.

🤖 You've probably seen those mental health apps promising instant relief. Or chatbots claiming they can "be your therapist."

Are they worth the hype? Sometimes. But here's the thing - not all AI tools are created equal.

In our latest blog, Meagan Chasteene, B.A, breaks down what AI can actually do for mental health care, and where it falls dangerously short.

AI works best as a background helper - not a replacement for sitting with someone who actually gets you. Useful? Yes. Can it replace human connection and expertise? Not even close.

Read the full blog to learn what questions to ask before trusting any mental health app, and how AI might actually help your therapy sessions.

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but these three techniques can help you regain control and find calm:

If-Then Statements:
If-Then Statements help us focus on our power in situations where we feel we have none. It acknowledges the fear or anxiety trigger, while also reframing it as a situation we can take control of. We may not be able to control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to that and if we internalize it going forward. Oftentimes, our worst fears are not what ends up happening. If-Then Statements help prepare for the worst if it does happen and is designed to give us back our control.

Now or Later Problem:
Sometimes we have a hard time compartmentalizing if something is a now or later problem. We worry about the future or stir up the past, worrying about situations that are outside of our control. Rather than worrying about these, we should focus on the present. This is easier said than done, but that is what this technique is for. For example, we may be worried about a possible diagnosis for a family member. It is important to remember that nothing has actually happened yet and that the diagnosis we fear may not come to pass. Rather than worry about what might come to pass, we should focus on the facts of what we know. In this case, we know the family member is getting checked on by the doctor for an issue. It could be anything. Until we know more, it’s best to compartmentalize the worry for now.

Emotion Surfing:
There is a fine line when it comes to acknowledging our feelings and letting them get the better of us. On the other hand, we do not want to bury them and have them crop up at inopportune times later down the road. It is okay to do this when needed, even for the same issues. Whenever feelings or thoughts become overwhelming, picture the wave and combine it with the feeling. Let it get bigger, reaching its peak, before watching it crest and grow smaller before crashing back down. Picture the water smoothing out and leaving nothing but soft ripples on the sand. Feel the emotions wash away with the water.

Our Story

Ozaukee Community Therapies LLC is a mental health counseling center that provides counseling and supportive services to children, families, individuals and the community. Located in Grafton, WI, this clinic was founded to support the growing need for counseling and supportive services in the area. Erin Perez, MA, LPC, is the founder and clinic director and has been working with children, families, and communities in Ozaukee County for the past 15 years. In 2017, we opened our first school based mental health satellite clinic. In 2018, Ozaukee Community Therapies partnered with United Way of Sheboygan County’s PATH program and opened 22 school based mental health satellite clinics. We also opened an additional school based mental health satellite clinic in Washington County, and an outpatient counseling center in Sheboygan that year. We offer a variety of services from outpatient mental health counseling (children, adults, families, couples, groups and school based), consulting, and trainings. In 2019, we will be opening another school based satellite clinic in Ozaukee County and The Family Resiliency Center. This center will support divorced/separated individuals and families with supervised visitation, safe exchange, a child specialist (licensed mental health therapist who is trained in family inclusive mediation), and a variety of groups/trainings.
